Does anyone know of a one piece rail system that will definately clear a gas piston system conversion? I have found a few companies (Midwest Industries) That claim their free float rails will clear most gas piston uppers. I spoke to a rep the other day and honestly all they could tell me was “most”. With the back order on most parts I was just hoping not to wait 8 weeks only to look at the rail and clearly see it wont fit…Thanks for all the help
I think without knowing specifically which piston system you’re planning to use, the horse is pushing the cart trying to figure out which rails will fit.
not one piece, but DD has new Piston Omegas. Bravo has them. it lists the compatible conversions.
I picked up an upper at Knobs Creek a few weeks ago that had a TNW conversion kit installed on sight by the gentleman who designed it. I know there is mixed emotions on TNW and im sure most have seen the postings on “other forums” about the carrier tilt issues but considering the designer was doing the instillation and the price was definately right i went ahead with the purchase. Now the hand guards that were installed with the kit have a small “milled " section that allows the piston to move freely. The designer of the kit also sells a UMG 2 piece quad rail that he personally milled to fit the system for like 100 bucks but that limits you to still having to use the d-ring and having a limited amount of space. I was hoping to convert the front post to a pinned low profile gas block and then covering it with a 12” rail complimented with a flip up front sight. This has proven to be a serious chore. I have gone to all the local shops and no one can really give me a straight answer. Every rail I have physically looked at doesent have the proper space to clear the system… Thanks for the insight
Have you considered cutting off your front sight and grinding it down to fit under your new 12" rail??? Its cost effective and pretty easy, hell, it doesnt even have to look nice unless you want it to. I did it to go under a 9" Troy rail and it works great. I milled my rail to go over my Ares kit. Though no material has to be removed to go over the “bobbed” FSB, just over the P/kit.
P.S. I can help with milling your rail if you need it.
Honestly I have seriousely been tossing around the idea of cutting the front post myself for about a week. I have just been a little apprehensive because it seems like it would be a little tricky to cut the post and the two bottom lugs while still pinned to the barrel. Yet if i punch the pins out and then grind and cut it it will be an easy job. The only problem is I run the risk of creating a faulty seal in my gas block upon re instillation and if theres any problems it will affect the entire gas piston sytem. With my luck I could just see a problem arising with the GPS and then when I contact the guy who installed it he will blaim it all on me for doing my own gunsmithing. All that being said I will still most likely do it myself- lol. On another note I shot my rifle for the first time today since putting it all togethor(I just couldnt resist ) It opperated very nicely and just as advertised was almost as clean as when it had never been fired. On a depressing note I only fired around 50 rounds including getting it zeroed and there was visible scuffs in the buffer tube. Now they werent anything serious but I can see what might happen if I were to shoot excessively.
Those are definite signs of tilt, though not bad yet as you said. Keep an eye on that.
I bobbed my FSB while still on the barrel, it turned out pretty good. The nicest FSB “bob job” I’ve seen was done by gotm4, its on the site here somewhere.
