First submarine in history to sink an enemy warship. Charleston Harbor SC.
After many sea trials and sinking twice, losing 13 crew members, she was recovered again. They had no problem getting volunteers for another replacement crew.
Brave men they were.

“On 17 February 1864, Hunley attacked and sank the 1,240-ton United States Navy[2] screw sloop-of-war Housatonic, which had been on Union blockade-duty in Charleston’s outer harbor. Hunley did not survive the attack and also sank, taking with her all eight members of her third crew, and was lost.”
The Hunley is a story of desperation for sure. Brave men.
I’m surprised the woke haven’t torn down the H.L. Hunley Memorial Marker yet.
Well what are you going to do, when the Federal army, led by a Tyrant, has invaded your State? And they are shelling your city full of women and children. And they have a naval blockade trying to starve your people out, and not even allowing medicine in.
Deo Vindice.
Their knowledge of history isn’t comprehensive enough to know it exists.
agree,
always thought Lee should have been more aggressive and went around washington in the early part of the war
Lee was a religious man, he had morals and ethics. Lee wanted to fight the invading army with dignity and honor. He would have never imagined that Lincoln’s army would wage war upon civilians.
And I believe that you are right, after the First Battle of Manassas Virginia, the Union army was retreating back to Washington.
The Reb army could have followed them to Washington and sacked the place. But they were not going to fight like terrorist’s.
The Yanks had no problem with waging war upon civilians.
Good point. They would have to stumble upon it, maybe do a little reading. Low risk.
Hey let’s fight the civil war again and make blanket statements about people based upon region. In addition to the practice of slavery, the south had a few incidents of their own.
The execution of 24 POWs at Centralia. The execution of African American soldiers at Fort Pillow because the south didn’t view them as soldiers. The hanging of 41 suspected unionists at Gainesville. And the killing around 150 unarmed men and boys at Lawrence. There were a few more incidents, nobody had clean hands.
It’s been recently discovered that the North could have had a much more advanced sub of their own, but they turned down the inventor, a German immigrant. The sub was a dual hull design - a first, and a forerunner of today’s subs. The sub was eventually funded and built by the Tiffany Co. after the war to farm oysters, and is the first sub known to use compressed air to surface.
