No laser can be passive.
A PEQ15 has a visible and an IR laser.

The PEQ 15 uses and active IR laser and illuminator. The red laser that is on it is not really very useful for shooting and is only really useful for laser bore sighting the PEQ. It would not be good for dissuading a hostile crowd either. That is why they make laser dazzlers.

Our enemies have NVG capability. I have personally done investigations for Marines loosing them in theater. They get stolen, reverse engineered and then used against us. In addition I am sure there is a proliferation of soviet night vision devices out there too.

A passive night aiming device would be something like a PVS-17 or PVS-24.

And no you would not just see a dot, you would see the laser beam impacting all the dust and particles in the air, so it pretty much points you right back to your position. It is important to practice discipline with the use of IR spectrum active devises just like it is important to practice light discipline.

You can see IR light with the camera in an iPhone, I don’t know about the others. Point your television remote at the phone with the camera activated. I would imagine in a dusty area you could see a laser designator with no problem in the dark. now, what difference it would make in that situation I’m not really sure, other than you’d know if they were aiming at you specifically.

Just tried it with my Razr camera, and the remote transmitter bulbs lit up with white light. I’ll have to try it in the dark, with someone to hold the remote at a distance.

any camera can see an IR illuminator/pointer if used during low light/dark situations…

however, they have IR filters to filter out excess light so you wont see its full illumination

if you were to remove the IR filter placed in front of the lens, your daylight pictures will be shit, but at night you will be able to utilize an IR illuminator and basically turn your camera into an NVG system because removing the filter allows more IR light to enter the lens…

it’ll only give you a viable range of 20-30 feet… but it works fairly well in houses…

its not a typical green image such as that from Intensifier based NVG’s… its just a standard image…

and no… I am not revealing potentially harmful information… as there are numerous videos on youtube showing you how to do this very thing…
