I can think of better uses for an M240 than harassing a little fluffball… like CUTTING DOWN a tree.
One of my fondest memories in Life was hunting Squirrels with my Grandfather in Indiana. He would tap a coin on an old pice of a horse hoof and Squirrels in the area would stick their heads up to see which squirrel got in to their nut hidey hole.
Just pop them with a .22, but would have been so much more fun with that.
We feed the squirrels at our shooting spot. Tortilla pieces from our breakfast tacos, Cliff bar pieces, unsalted peanuts, etc. Only the males come to get the food. Never had a female come up to us.
I’ve been putting corn out for the squirrels in our yard for probably 10 years.
They all eat it(best i can recall the most was 14 at one time), but they all act like I’m going to run them down everytime I step outside.
Fortunately none have ever got in the house. I’ve heard that can make mice and rats seem like a positive.
We lived out in a rural Indiana Farm House for a while. It had lathe and plaster walls that left a hollow spaces between the walls. back in those days they used to love to run cloth covered electric cable. Well those Squirrels will eat the cloth and usually while doing so shortcircut and then the Squirrel your wiring, the wall and maybe the house go up.
One Holiday weekend as we ate dinner, We noticed that we had a squirrel running through the wall. So my Dad got some field corn and we baited that squirrel in the basement. By this time of the day, my Dad was well into his Beers so while we waited for the squirrel in the basement, he took the flashlight and he handed me the Pellet Gun, “When I Shine the Light.” he said. “Wow, he must be drunk” I thought.
He heard the squirreland tuirned on the light while I brought up the gun and hit that rascal right between his eyes. The Squirrel went a foot in the air then came down on his side and spun around three times and ran up the stairs into the kitchen.
My Mother who was minding her own business and feeding our two Black Labs table scraps in the Kitchen when this crazy squirrel ran accross the table and jumped on the stove with both Black Labs in hot pursuit.
They made three Laps around the House before my Mom cut them out the front door.
I wanted to go see but, my Dad said, lets just stay down here and be quiet a while.
I get it, rural vs urban.
Mine have had generations of learned behavior in an urban/suburban environment, conversely a friend in Oregon’s rural property has some that are just savage little beasts that tear each other and everything around them apart. Sometimes a bad animal just has to be culled to save the herd.
@jsbhike You’re gonna laugh at this… we DO have ‘em pop into the house occasionally, always either when one of us is at the door with a peanut or when chased in by another while the door’s open. The former is usually a dart-in/grab/dart-out, the latter usually means a quick look up at one of us like “ohshit how’d I get stuck in here LEMMEOUT!” They know where they belong and where they don’t, and for structures stick only to an old shed that I’ve specifically told them they can shelter from the cold and rain in. Funny thing is, ours aren’t impressed with corn at all… they really like black oily sunflower seeds though, and sharing my walnuts.
