Well - after 25 years in martial arts, and 40 years shooting wheelguns and 1911s, I finally got me a little .22 plinking rifle. It’s something called a Colt 6920.
Looks like this will be the best list to get my questions answered, so here goes…
First - please feel free to direct me to any FAQ or sticky that might take care of most of these questions. I’m a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to computers, but I’m sure I can find it if you point me in the right direction:)
Looking for a good source of new USGI (or equivalent or better) mags - both 20 & 30 rd.
Rather than piecemeal something together - does someone market a “field repair kit” with everything commonly needed all in one package???.
Looking for a good source for a CD/DVD for taking the little poodle shooter apart. Field stripping is no problem - I’m looking for a little more detail.
Is anyone aware of an Internet site that will show a comparison of what the shooter sees in the various red dot sights? A torn retina and resulting laser surgery has pretty much screwed up the vision in my dominant shooting eye, so I’m searching around for a little optical assistance. (That’s also the reason I don’t shoot the Garands or shotguns anymore - retinal surgeon says my shoulder weapons need to stay on the low-recoil side of things - hence the new lil shooter in 5.56.)
Finally (for now:) - I’m looking for a bracket that will allow me to mount something like a Surefire light to the carbine. I’m sort of a minimalist, so I don’t really want to add rail forends, verticle grips and what not - just a light to keep me from getting frightened in the dark:)
Am a Godan-Renshi in Isshin Ryu. Had to turn the dojo over to my senior blackbelt when the retina detachment happened. For some reason my surgeon doesn’t want me taking any shots to the head:) And your style?
#1, Brownells, very good mags at good prices. They (Brownells) now has a catalog of just AR parts, will make your mouth water.
#2, Again, Brownells carries several companies field repair kits (or you can build your own from what they carry)
#3, try AGI (American Gunsmithing Institute). Their DVD’s are excellent. Can get them directly from AGI or from , guess who, Brownells.
#4, not sure but I would be surprised if there wasn’t one.
#5, you can get a small rail that mounts to the front sight from several places, including Brownells.
Actually I am not a shill for Brownells, I am a small gun repair business and have found that Brownells can handle just about all my gunsmithing needs. That said, you can substitute MidwayUSA in the above answers and be happy.
My 6920 is still on layaway, so I admire your taste in weaponry. Until I pay it off, I have a 6520 to keep me company.
Bravocompanyusa.com has a great deal on mags and parts, and they get your order to you ASAP. IMO, you can’t have too many magazines and they sell them singly, or in groups of ten or a hundred (with corresponding decreases in price).
It sounds as if you are in my basic age group. I recently got back to the shorty carbines after a hiatus–had a Colt CAR-15 in the late 80s, privately owned for LE purposes. Rather foolishly sold it, finally replaced it with a very similar A1 sighted Bushmaster M4gery which is working out nicely.
I can still shoot the iron sighted M1 and M1A, but the shorter sight radius on the shorty is much more of a challenge. Finally sprung for a compact ACOG 1.5X and can’t quit grinning. Did look at the Eotech but this is better for my purposes. As a matter of fact I think it is just about perfect for the performance envelope of the carbine.
I am a long-term satisfied Brownell’s customer. I have found their mags to be good.
The only other things I have done to the carbine are a non-adjustable Jard trigger and a D-fender to beef up the extractor tension a bit. Otherwise I am from the “less is more” school.
Hope you have as much fun with yours as I do with mine.
