OK experts, tell me some secrets on a smooth running 10.3

Here we go! I am in the process of building a 10.3" SBR. So far I have a DD CHF 10.3" barrel, a UBR stock, BCM BCG, and an SSA. This weapon will be suppressed as soon as I decide upon a Surefire or AAC can. My Class 3 dealer buddy is trying very hard to get me to buy a Gemtech but I think it’s too heavy.

I want this to run both suppressed and unsuppressed and reliability is key. Tell me your experiences and ideas.

Cory, if you want I have a 10.3 and Surefire can you can run. You can see if it’s what you’re after.

get an H1 and H2, experiment with both with your duty ammo.

aside from that, your barrel of choice will likely have the appropriate sized gas port (i’m not sure what DD taps at), and it’ll be correct chamber size. might want to use the O-ring. there’s really not much more you can do.

IF you should happen to have problems trying to get the proper balance, an XP spring can help give you that dial-in that allows you to run the ammo range you want.

I forgot to add that I have a Wolf XP spring and a Spike’s ST-T2 buffer.

PM sent…

properly gassed, you shouldn’t need it. i’d stick with a standard quality carbine spring first, and not introduce the XP spring unless you have problems that can’t be resolved with a different buffer weight.

I actually put this spring/buffer setup in all of my builds. The only issue I have had so far is before the first 300 to 500 rounds are fired, the bolt will not lock back on the last round unless I use hot ammo (got a lot of hot ammo ).

My Daniel Defense 12.5" upper runs suppressed and unsuppressed just fine with a Sprinco “Blue” spring and Spike’s T-2 buffer.

If you run into problems while suppressed, most likely a bolt over base (where BCG outruns an almighty PMAG), I would seriously look at a Vltor A-5 and their 6 or 7 oz buffer.

You should be good to go with your setup (DD 10.3). A buddy of mine has the same barrel and is running a Gemtech G5 with no issues. It had a FTF once when he was using a buddies Tapco magazine. Pmags and GI mags no issues. He was running a H2 , BCM full auto BCG, with Centurion XM193 brass (shot around 500rds)…Hope this helps

I agree with bkb0000. Put a USGI spring in it. And get a real buffer… H2 or H3. The spikes thing didn’s do as well in the high speed videos of Bolt Bounce made by 87GN.

You can start with an H2 for one of DD’s 10.3" barrels. I’d stick with a standard carbine spring as well.

when u say usgi spring how can u differentiate it from others?
would that be a current contractor

I can’t speak for suppressed function, but on my unsuppressed LMT 10.5" I’m using an H buffer with a standard carbine spring and a BCM extractor upgrade and am able to shoot crappy steel cased .223 ammo and have no problems.

I’d forget about the Gemtec and go with an AAC, Surefire, or KAC silencer.

Gemtec is a distant 5 place when it comes to 5.56 rifle cans.

I’m leaning toward AAC M4-1000 with Breakout.

Don’t think for a second that your advice is not considered, but I put xp springs in all of my builds. Can having xp springs hurt?

I would like to know more about this…

I have not tested XP action springs so I recommend what I know works well.

XP springs tend to worry me in general because I don’t know if any engineering went into them or if someone just said, “make it 10 percent higher rate.”

That silencer is not heavy duty enough for an SBR.

You need an M4-2000

I am happy with my AAC M4-2000. Had I not gone that route it would have been a Surefire can. I think the AAC will serve you well.
