ok everyone…i want to make a truce…i took your alls advise and went on a search last night…was up way to late trying to find better stuff for my build…after rereading my last thread i went over the top and took it the wrong way and i want to apologise…i got a lot of quality sound advise and was to bullheaded to take it…so i went through the list i had from the last post and went on a search for better stuff like you all said i should do…and i think i have a better list of parts now…and if you all would i would appriciate it if you would take a look at it and see if how this list is…i will say yes i am new to the AR platform but despite the last thread i really do want to learn about it…this build will take me a while but a build is what i want to do vs buying one compleate…i know that it might be better/cheaper but i really want to do the build on one…so if you all will still accept me here i do want to apologise again and would appriciate any info i can get…i think i have a lot better list of parts here now than i did before…so here goes.
again…i really do want to do this build and would like your alls input on it to see if these are good quality components and to make sure that i have everything i need…i have been reading the thread on the m4chart…havent made it all the way through it but i am reading it…and again everyone i do apologise for the thread earlier…i should not have took the replys i got the way i did or said the things i did…and for that i do apologise to everyone that was involved or read it.
That’s a significantly higher quality list of parts…though I’m not sure it will price out better than just buying a comparable upper.
Since it seems you’re dead set on assembling it yourself I’d make sure and double up on the reading around here and include the tools you’ll need in your final budget.
Assembled properly I’m sure you’ll be happy with it.
a very decent quality, yet affordable handrail for your application would be a Troy TRX extreme 13" or a VTAC extreme 13". Both are made by Troy and available at most major retailers. They are light weight, well ventilated, no-nonsense rails that are easy to install.
Thanks guys…and really i am sorry about the other thread and should have listened first…so far the price i have on this list is jsut a tad over $900 not bad i dont think…i was figuring around a grand for what i was wanting which is fine this will be a slow process build i know but worth it in the end…i looked at the Troy Battle Rails earlier…look like a great rail but not sure if i want to go with a Quad rail like theirs are…not really sure what i want as far as the rail goes…would like a free float if possible but dont know if its really a must or not…would you all suggest a free float?
and yes i do want to build one…i know i can do it…no doubt in that in my mind…with the info avalible i dont think it will be a huge problem…i mainly want to make sure that i have everything i need listed…i am pretty sure i do just want to make sure that all the parts i have listed there are what i need…aside from tools i know ill need some of them as well…such as action blocks barrel wrench roll pin punches and so on…but that will come with time as well
Totally unrelated but you really need to work on the way you post. The endless run-on paragraphs and the incessant … thing have got to go. I started to try to help in your other thread before it went south and just couldn’t get through the odd way of posting.
This is not meant as bashing, but as hopefully advice on how to get better and more constructive responses to your questions. Like it or not, on the internut the only way folks have of judging you is how you write, and if you write like an oddball people are going to assume that you ARE an oddball.
Ignoring the post, and just reading through the list of specs, I’m at somewhat of a loss as I’m not sure what you want the rifle to do.
Is this something you’re looking at for a precision setup, hunting, or what end use are you envisioning?
Sorry rob_s its a force of habit. i would like to have a rifle that is accurate, mainly a bench gun and just for target shooting only, it wont be a hunting rifle, as i have more than enough of them.
i just want to build something that is accurate out 400-500 yards. I am sure that a 16" barrel will work jsut fine for this but just not what i would like to have on the gun. more of a looks thing for me really.
Nothing wrong with a 20" barrel if weight and maneuverability aren’t issues for you. You might consider something like the Geissele triggers for your project as well.
Also, on the stocks, you may find the Emod to be a little better suited to your purposes. A little longer, a little heavier.
The one issue you may find with running a 20" barrel and a collapsible stock, outside of having to find the buffer and spring that the rifle likes best, is balance and the shift in the center of gravity of the gun.
I really appreciate the use of paragraphs and proper sentences as well, it makes deciphering posts much easier and keeps everyone in a better more helpful mood. The use of ellipses doesn’t bother me nearly as much…though perhaps that’s because I use them in excess sometimes too.
With a great barrel like the BCM you’ve listed, you’re going to want to free float it. With a low profile gas block, you’re pretty much going to have to free float it anyway.
I’m with rob_s in that the focus of the rifle is a bit vague but am going to assume that from the lack of a rear sight you are leaning to an exclusively scoped rifle … which is fine.
The 56.00 on the VLTOR flash-hider is possibly more than you need. Since you are not pinning it might just start with a $8 A2 Birdcage.
I’d just like to mention that in terms of doing a build you are looking at probably $125 in specific tools. (upper and lower vice block, barrel wrench, brass punches) Don’t know if you own any of/all that already …
But it does add up to 10 PMags and some lube …
I really wanted to build a rifle, ended up buying all the tools and have yet to do so. The completed components are just so good that it is hard to justify.
ETA: Just got a sale flyer from BCM. Champ, it might be just what you are after. Check them out of you haven’t today.
i did see last night when i was on BCM that they have quite a bit of stuff on sale such as Uppers and so on, but again im bull headed and really do want to build one from scratch.
i know i will need quite a few tools as well, but thats not a huge deal as i am sure this will not be the first one i build.
the Vltor Flash hider is probably more than what i need, but it sure looked good. that part isnt a huge concern really and im sure i can do something else, jsut depends on what trips my trigger when the time comes
sorry i forgot to put the stripped lower in the list there. there is a store here locally that keeps them so i am going to get one from him. i didnt forget about it jsut forgot to put it in the list i have there.
Along with what Rob said about the Emod. Look at the new A5 stock setup, emod stock and receiver extension all packaged together, and it comes with a buffer specific to a 20" rifle gas and collapsible stock setup.
I second the A2 flash hider, I have a lot of fancy muzzle devices, and a Vltor pinned on a 14.5, Its ok, but nothing special. Now my builds that have FHs (not brakes) all have an A2. I also dont see the reason of the Noveske CH, its probably the same as many, if thats the only thing your going to order from them I would just order it elsewhere with your other parts and save shipping
I like your tone in this thread very much, I have to respect a man that knows and admits when he is wrong. FWIW, BCM makes the best charging handle as well, I use the Mod 4.
champ198 - i’ve closed your original thread. kudos on listening to the folks here, and changing your tone and posting style (much easier to read now). there’s lots to learn and share here, so i hope you stick around.
