Dear Mike,
Thanks in advance for your response and taking the time to answer these questions. I have been starting to use 45 degree offset sights as Backup iron sights to a primary variable optic. My question deals with zeroing with the offset sights. If I cant the gun so that the offset sights are sitting exactly upright and zero in this position, do I ever have to worry about windage holdovers?
The reason why I am asking is because of my experience in shooting rollover prone and also from diagrams of line of bore vs. Line of sight diagrams. To the best of my understanding, the barrel points upward at a very slight angle so that the bullet crosses the line of sight usually at two different distances. Thus, when I shoot rollover prone, I aim slightly in direction of the magazine to compensate for that angle. Since the sights are now in a different direction and the barrel is now angled very slightly to the left or right, the shooter needs adjust accordingly. Thus, if I turn the rifle 45 degrees left to make my offset irons stand upright, the barrel is now angling slightly up and left, and now I may need to worry about windage hold off at distance.
I am sorry if this doesn’t make sense because it’s sort of hard to explain in words alone. I guess, the quick question would be, ‘if I zero the offset irons with the weapon canted so that the sights are straight up and down, would there ever be any left-right holdover at any distance or would it be exactly like if the sights were mounted at 12 O’clock on top?’
Thanks again for your time.
