I want to know what people think about this topic. pros and cons of each set up. what are you running and why?
what is lighter? what is better for a back up long range shot? what is acceptable for cqb speed? which mount and red dot and why? which iron sights and why?
What is your current setup? Is this to complement a dedicated scope on a recce style rifle??
I think it comes down to budget and personal preference. I personally have always been faster with offset red dots, but adding another 500 dollars to a rifle for just off set shots isn’t always feasible for everyone, not to mention you have to remember to change and turn on/off batteries. Off set irons will save you a couple hundred dollars but may not be as quick as a T1 or RMR.
Used both and the off set dot is far better. The only advantage to the off set irons is if your main optic fogs your back up will too when going from warm to cold temps or vice versa. The off set dot has the same advantages over off set irons that a standard dot has over standard irons.

there are a few different methods of mounting an angled red dot. are some less angled than others for less rotation required when transitioning?

That is a tough dilemma.
I was facing the same question on what to put on my scoped 308 AR. Wanted to offset an Aimpoint, but then thought to myself if I put backup irons on rifles where a red dot is my primary optic, I would by that logic have a scope, offset red dot and double-offset irons. Since that’s obviously a no-go, I settled on scope with offset irons.
Like the previous poster mentioned, if you get fogging or unlikely battery/circuitry failure (cold weather, etc.), the irons will be more likely to work.
Although it must be said that red dots are way easier and quicker to use, for me anyways.
Those of you running an offset red dot, do you also run buis on top rail?
No not anymore too redundant and unnecessary weight.
