With training this can be very viable and effective; assuming your primary need is a magnified optic.
By training I’m just advocating consistent and routine practice transitioning quickly from far to near targets. Not necessarily formal training.
In this setup I am most in favor of (and most familiar with) the “angled ofset” where you cant the weapon to transition as opposed to the “high mount” secondary on top of your primary.
Edit to expand on this:
I think often someone would like a magnified optic on their carbine for use at the range on the 300 yard line because that is where they actually shoot their carbine. But, the only time that person would actually conceivably use their carbine in defense of life would be within the confines of their home or within 100 yards.
So, I think you have to clearly define the intended purpose of the weapon. If it is your only carbine, and you fall into the category above, and you intend to use it for defense… I think that person is better served with a red dot for defensive use and a flip to side magnifier for the range.
If you fit in that category and have defensive use otherwise covered, and this is a LR, range use, or hunting weapon that might be called on in a close range or defensive situation then this setup can be effective.
