Offset BUIS or Offset Red Dot?

I have a DDM4V5LW I put a Trijicon Accupoint TR24G on and initially I was thinking about putting BUIS on along with an offset red dot (probably an Aimpoint micro), but I’ve been wondering if that might be a little over kill and if I should just put offset irons on the rifle.

The role of the rifle is a general purpose rifle I could use for home defense, carbine classes, plinking or God forbid SHTF. So, what is the general wisdom?

None of the above.

Offset your ACOG.

I’m rolling with a low power variable optic and off-set irons.

come on man, I don’t have an ACOG, I have an Accupoint, nobody offsets an variable…

How’s the weather where you’re at in winter?

Is your AccuPoint in a QD mount?

Sunny south Florida, I work in Miami, relax up in Palm Beach… Worst weather we have is one of my 3 hoodies i own at night for 4 weeks in the winter… I pretty much carry a Shield all year round because of the weather…

Yes it is, ADM Recon QD mount…

So basically you don’t have to worry about your optic fogging up in cold weather. You also have the ability to quickly detach it if needed. I’m in north Florida and I have a TR24R on my rifle in a Bobro QD mount. I just run a set of Magpul BUS and I haven’t had any problems with this setup, and that includes shooting in the rain with steam coming off the barrel. YMMV. Be advised that I’m only about a half step up from couch commando first class so take my input for what it’s worth.

I was going to wait for the MBUS Pros to hit shelves, but then I started thinking if I really need BUIS plus offset Red dot… I’d rather have quality over quantity, so I don’t mind putting an offset red dot on the Accupoint. I have a cat tail on back order, but I wouldn’t mind being able to transition to 1x even quicker than the cat tail in case my TR24G happened to be on 4x in some SHTF scenario…

I’ve read accounts of people who run offset BUIS who believe not only is it sufficient, it’s actually quicker close range than the red dot. Regarding handguns, I just bought a M&P CORE with RMR and I’m kinda seeing how that is possible…

What kind of cat tail do you have on backorder? I have one on my scope from 3 gun stuff.

It’s worked well for me so far. It’s plenty robust and easy to manipulate without sticking out too far. I drew a line on it with a silver paint pen so I can easily tell what power the scope is set on (which is 1x about 99% of the time).

Another thought is that if by some remote chance you do find yourself with your AccuPoint fogged over, then an Aimpoint would likely be fogged over as well. Offset irons might be the better option because it would avoid the fogging issue altogether.

Probably should have bought that one, but this is the one that is on backorder that I expect to come in really soon…

Well, fog is a possible reality in the summer time in south Florida, that’s a really good point… So the next logical question is, what offset iron sights?

Both.

not my picture, got it from - http://soldiersystems.net/2013/07/12/warrior-expo-knights-armament/

I know KAC just put out an offset version of their highly regarded BUS, but they’re flip-ups. I don’t really get the concept of flip-up offset irons. I always thought the whole point behind offsets was to have a back up sighting system in place and ready for use. Having to deploy them seems counter-intuitive to me, but I’ve never used offsets so maybe I’m just talking outta my arse here. I would gladly defer to the opinions of individuals who have actually used them.

Personally, if I was going to give them a try I would take a hard look at the Surefire set. They’re a bit pricey, but Surefire puts out top quality gear.

Interesting picture above, and it shows the KAC flip-ups I mentioned in my previous post. However, if fogging is an issue then you’d still be screwed with that setup, as your backup flip-up irons would be rendered useless by the fogged Aimpoint they’re co-witnessed with.

It was simply an illustration to show line of sight with both options.

That’s my thought on the matter as well.
