Off to a Good Start - Courtesy of M4C

Well, after spending a lot of time here lurking, I recently took the plunge and not only joined M4C, but purchased my first AR. I took my time and read a lot of the great information shared here. I then took even more time and thought a lot about my needs, and tried to keep my wants at bay. I am only a civilian shooter, and wanted an AR for home defense, classes, and the enjoyment of shooting sports in an attempt to maximize my own abilities.

Below is a listing of what I purchased from G&R Tactical (Hi, Grant! :D). He was a pleasure to deal with, being generous with his time and advice. I didn’t feel pressured or “steered” into anything he was selling. After reading up here, Grant gave me enough additional information to help me make up my own mind instead of selling what he thought I should buy.

I’d also like to thank rob_s (Hi ,Rob! :D) for also responding to questions sent via PM without him having the foggiest who I am, other than a fellow M4C’er. His input and analytical style helped me focus on determining my needs too.

So here is what I ended up with:

Daniel Defense M4
Aimpoint H-1
ADM mount with SOCOM riser for lower-1/3 co-witness
TangoDown Battlegrip (A2 grip isn’t for me)
BFG Vickers padded two-point sling

I purchased the following from a friend who has a business selling tactical gear:

Surefire X300
11 PMAGs (to go with the 1 with the DD M4)

(As an aside, the first thing my friend, who is in LE and runs a Colt as a patrol rifle, said when I opened the case for the DD M4 at his house was, “How did they make it so light?!”)

I have been able to take the rifle out for a bit of shooting, and I look forward to a whole lot more. I am still trying to find the best fit of the gun to me, including where I want to run my support hand, and whether I like using the VFG or not. Good thing the answers to those questions can only be found with more trigger time!

To round out this long-winded intro, suffice it to say I am very happy to belong here, and even happier I finally took the plunge into the world of the AR. Oh, and just so you know, I blame you all for the case of BRD I contracted. I ordered a BCM lower and another TD grip earlier this week, both from G&R. Now what do I need more? A 16" middy, or an SBR…

See you around the forum, fellas!

Where are the mandatory photos at?

Sorry, Doc. The camera is down until I get a new battery charger for it. I’ll try and get some pics up ASAP.

Besides, you guys know what a DD M4 looks like, don’t you? :stuck_out_tongue:

Sounds like a great start! But I’m sorry to inform you that there is no known cure for BRD.

I am a fan of the Tango Down grips myself! I hate A2 grips and I think the MOE and MIAD grips are just a little too wide for my preference. Enjoy your new rifle!

Congratulations of the purchase of a very fine rifle from a very fine company! I’m sure she will serve you for years to come!

I will highly recommend dropping the VFG or swapping it for a stubby. The consensus it you should move your support hand as far forward as you can to best control recoil and to quickly transition from target to target. I started shooting much better when I finally gave in to this practice.

If you’re going to run the vertical front grip, it is best used as a “memory bump” and placing your bottom two fingers on the top of the VFG with your middle and index finger on the bottom of the rail with your thumb wrapped around the rail facing slightly forward. It is not recommended to grapple the VFG like a broom handle or a baseball bat.

I hope this is making sense and I hope it helps!

Glad you like everything and thank you for your business!
