Although the charging dog looked huge to the LEO, there still was nowhere near the mass of an average adult human - so a good chance there wasn’t full expansion (possibly even a TT-GSW). Similar problem US forces ran into in Somalia in 1993. (If you’re not familiar with the termminology - one of the nicknames for the locals was “skinnies”.) Barring a CNS shot - without perfect placement into large plumbing (which will still take time for vic to become hypotensive/LOC), there sometimes isn’t enough distance for deformation, fragmentation or energy dump (depending on the caliber/speed). I’m sure Doc will chime in with more data.
Her first day on the job, my wife (a veterinarian) had to treat a Rotty that had a 12-14" wound track (slug!) from a 12 gauge - fired so close tha wad was also in the wound track. Rotty pulled through.
FWIW - how was that for a real life Teuller Drill? From the holster while backing up - starting to get off the line of the attack! Anyone know what type of holsters they use?

I also find it interesting how the person who wrote the post in the link says that the dogs owners was “having a seizure.” Narcotics will do that.

Some people are stupid beyond your wildest dreams. I’m really sorry for the officers that have to endure such public.
That sucks that the dog had to get shot, he was all jacked up because his owner just had a seizure and there were cops approaching him.
However, who would let a pitbull attack them just because the dog didn’t understand what was going on? Many people honestly expect a cop to just let a dog maul them because it’s an innocent animal. Idiots.
I could understand the public being upset if the cop shot a docile little poodle and had no reason to be near the dog anyway but honestly wtf people. You can clearly see that dog charging that cop in the video!!
Imagine if the cops saw the dog backed off 50 yards and the guy got ran over, then people would REALLY be mad.
A whole lot of “wrong place, wrong time” going on there.

The dog started becoming aggressive extremely quickly, attacking a pedestrian first then the officer. Given the close distance of the public with the animal, OC spray may have accidentally contaminated innocent pedestrians. Per the video it was less than 2.5 seconds, roughly, from when the dog attacked a pedestrian to when the dog attacked the officer. 2.5 seconds is not enough for anything more than a one stop hit reaction and that is all that can be expected.
Okay, I watched the whole video again, and I am getting more pissed off at the bystanders. F**king liberal New Yorkers.

It is unfortunate that the dog was shot. However, the dog was very aggressive, as evidenced by its lunging at the lady. Good thing it did not bite that lady. No, the officer did not have time to react in any manner differently than what he did. Action beats reaction. The dog attacked the officer and had the officer attempted “less than lethal means” to stop it, he would not have been able to do anything at all and the Pit Bull would have bitten and ‘clamped’ onto the officer.
There was no time to review the many options available to safely and securely calm down the Pit Bull and have it sit by the curb. Again, action beats reaction. The Pit Bull was already in attack mode towards the officer. The officer had no alternative but to shoot the dog to prevent his being bitten. Haven’t many of us seen videos of Pit Bulls attacking people, biting them and people not being able to get the Pit Bull to release its bite. The officer did the right thing!
Unfortunately, people, as evidenced by their reactions and comments on the video, are quick to judge and condemn a situation which took place in seconds. Had the officer not acted the way he did the situation might have escalated into something much more dangerous. This also demonstrates that people will turn on anyone doing what is proper for everyone’s safety and criticize them, curse them and accuse them of using too much force, etc…
One of the lessons from this incident is that you need to be careful what you get involved in, especially if you make a decision to pull your firearm out.
Just ask any law officer who has been sued by a victim that they’ve saved, citing excessive force used by the officer against the criminal. And, had that officer not used the force necessary to save that victim, the victim might have been killed or at the very least severely wounded.
I’m not questioning the officier shoothing the dog but why let it flop around and suffer? Why didn’t they just put it out of it’s misery?
One way ticket to a place no one wants to be.
That’s what bothered me most about the shoot. If you’re going to mortally wound, don’t let the thing flop and yelp. Put a bullet in it’s head and end it’s suffering.
The story actually says that the dog pulled through and is recovering.
In the public’s eyes that would make matters worse. Many see animals as having similar value to people. Would you mortally wound a man who tries to kill you, and then put a bullet in his head to end his suffering? Same concept to many Americans today.
That is certainly the humane thing to do.
However, then you have an officer “executing” an injured, helpless, non-threatening animal. Cops are not vets, they cant say for sure if the dog is going to die anyway. They can only react in self defense until the threat is no longer a threat. If you shoot something thats no longer a threat in front of a crowd, regardless of your good intentions… my guess is you’d get in trouble.
In this case its a good thing the cop didn’t dead check the dawg. Cuz he is going to make it. (My guess he will get put down for attacking two people though…)
While it is unfortunate that the dog was shot, however last I checked getting bitten by a pit-bull is not in a police officer’s job description. In a raid or warrant service, officers can plan for dogs by bringing fire extinguishers, shields, or other means to deal with aggressive canines. On a dynamic street encounter, there is not time or equipment available. The officers arrived to help the individual down on the ground–evidently the dog’s owner. The dog clearly exhibited aggressive tendencies when it nipped the women. Had that occurred in a state allowing more widespread CCW, the dog might have been shot at that point by the civilian who was nipped. Next, as the officer moved towards the victim and the woman who was nipped, the dog charged the officer–he had very little time to react, no obligation to get bitten in the line of duty, and reacted appropriately to stop the threat that was rapidly closing on him. He only fired to stop the immediate threat and did not keep shooting once the threat was mitigated–actually the officer exhibited superb judgement and restraint, especially since the dog lived and is recovering!
Someone needs to tell the moronic women who keeps screaming “why did you do that” to STFU, as it is pretty clear exactly what and why things occurred.
As much as that pains me to watch, being a HUGE pit bull lover, in that short amount of time he had to react I doubt the officer could have or would have done anything different. The people screaming at him are clearly either already biased about cops, or have never been bitten by a strong dog. Their size betrays the force they have.
Good to hear the dog may pull through, hopefully it can go to a responsible owner now.
