Noveske m4 ejection pattern

Hello,

Factory Noveske m4 14.5" middy complete rifle. Came with h buffer. Rifle throws brass to the front of rifle at say 1 or 1:30. Tried sprinco white, blue and red with a combination of h, h1, h3 buffers. Seems to work best with red sprinco and h2. Ejection is now at 3 with everything from green tip, 77 smk’s and 55 grain white box. Is this normal or overgassed. It’s way different from the way it came from Noveske?

Thanks

If it feeds, shoots and ejects reliability with no issues, I think you’re over thinking this.

Did you try contacting Noveske?

Noveske sizes their gas ports to ensure reliability in all conditions and tend to be slightly larger some other mfgs.

I’d use an H2 or H3 buffer and call it good.

Ya, I believe your right

This. Use the Springco white and an H2 or H3.

You could also try an adjustable gas block.

When Bushmaster does it, it’s because they’re ‘hobby grade plinkers’, so the dirt shooters can use 223…

There could very well be a problem with the specific barrel.

When shrubmaster makes a barrel as well as Noveske, then your point could be considered.

Also, I’ve seen a .088 gas port on a 16" carbine gas shrubmaster. Noveske is nowhere near that. Not even close.

If you think there is an issue, contact Noveseke.

In my view, there is a small range of acceptable port sizes for each particular configuration.

I think of them as lightly, optimally and strongly gassed.

The difference between each step is usually only .003".

Again, all three sizes are acceptable and will generally work well.

Anything smaller and larger than those three sizes is either over gassed or under gassed.

The various problems that result from improper gassing are well known.

What Noveske does is choose the strongly gassed option.

Shrubmaster is known to make ports even larger than this and are by definition, overgassed.

That’s the difference.

When I saw the OP’s question and Clint’s response, this came to mind (from the “New BCM barrels” thread):

"Some more info

Gas Port diameters:
BCM 14.5" Mid ELW-F, .078"
Noveske 14.5" Mid Skinny, .088"

This likely explains your Noveske’s slight overgassedness.

Thanks all ya’ll. learned a bit for sure. Doesn’t sound like I have a problem. Really appreciate all the feedback

He makes a valid point. Saying “yeah, but Bushmaster is worse” doesn’t change the fact that it makes no sense to port a 14.5 mid barrel like that; the whole point of that setup is to use just enough gas to cycle. If it runs optimally with an H3, you’ve pretty much defeated the purpose.

Thanks to all the advise above, Including call Noveske.

So I bought the Noveske rifle direct from them. We get to talking and I end up buying an additional Noveske “blacknitrided” bcg. In addition to the one the rifle comes with. So, the rifle gets here, I yank the the the rifle came with and was test fired with and install the latest fast and shiny blackNitrided BCG. The gun ejected like crap at the muzzle as I posted above.

So, I drop the original bcg back in and it runs perfect with a 3 ejection all day with stock spring and H2.

Took the black bcg apart and noticed a short (as compared to my BCM’s and DD’s) ejector spring hole. And the hole is drilled a bit off with a shoulder that binds the ejector.

I believe this is made by RCA.

Pass.

BTW Noveske is awesome at helping me with it. Great advice to talk to them…duh

Yeah I’m a bit bummed and surprised at Noveske for using RCA to make a BCG for them. Never had seen anything good about them.

I have had NOTHING but trouble from RCA BG’s. Peened lugs, “sticky” chambering where I almost have to mortar the gun to clear the chamber administratively, etc.

If you want a QPQ bolt-carrier group, I recommend Fathom Arms BCG. It is made by Azimuth, and is good to go. Their customer service is also very good.
