My first AR and first build. Not new to firearms, but totally new to the AR platform.
First of all, thanks to all here for your help. I wish I knew who to thank personally, but this board was a tremendous help. Between this forum and a few other friends I’m really happy with the way things turned out. Also, thanks to Rainier Arms, in Auburn WA…great group of guys (semi-local to me)
Shot 8 magazines through it yesterday. No failures of any sort. After dialing in, I stretched it out to 200M. Shooting with the irons, from field postions. Ammo was 55gr PMC Bronze .223 (all my local shop had). Took a quick pic of one of the plates at 200M, I circled the “fresh” hits in red. I swore I was going to stick with irons for a while, but I really feel an ACOG calling me.
Again, thanks to all. I look forward to continuing to pick your collective brain. Looking into an upcoming carbine class as well.

That’s a fantastic looking rifle…minus that pistol grip;)
Rainier has always been first class when Ive dealt with them and they ship using a teleporter or something.
I understand many will point you in direction of becoming proficient with irons first before you go with optics, however you went out and bought/built one of finest rifles to run light precision applications with and your barrel and trigger deserve so much more than iron sights imho. Just a lot gun being wasted if you don’t utilize a good low to mid powered variable optic like a 1-4x. I know you mentioned a Acog but I would personally look at picking up a TR24g or NF nxs 1-4x. That way your really tapping into the accuracy that you paid a premium for.
Congrats, Enjoy:)
eta…I think you got a slot left til you run outta real estate on your top rail of your upper rec…if so may I suggest moving that sight all the way back so that you can the most sight radius as possible.
I fully agree with you on the necessity of an optic device, perferably magnified, on this rifle. Especially since I’m now old enough that if I do move the rear sight to the last slot on the rail, with the front sight in any kind of focus, the rear (Troy DOA) is blurred beyond any recognition, with the aperture and marks becoming a useless mix of black and white. I originally placed it in the last slot, but found at the range, that moving it up that one slot helps my sight picture a lot. Moving it up one more yet helps more, but like you said, I’m losing sight radius. It’s kind of a balancing act.
I’m not so worried about becoming proficient with the irons. I grew up shooting and hunting on irons, and still regularly shoot with them (Marlin 336 and inline TC muzzleloader). Thanks for the suggestion on the TR24 and the NF, both look like good choices worth looking into.
Occasionally, this rifle is going to wear something with a lot more magnification. It’s just too accurate and far too much fun to shoot not to take it along on the occasional Oregon varmint hunt.
