But but but what about diplomacy
This is the problem with nuclear weapons and guided missiles.
A century ago, if some pissant little country like North Korea was bad-mouthing us, we’d just park a couple of cruisers off their coast and they would suddenly rethink everything and come to the conclusion that we’re not such bad people, after all.
North Korea is essentially a hostage situation, with millions of malnourished, psychologically abused hostages. It’s the most totalitarian system there’s ever been. The people have been so mentally broken and live in such miserable, abject delusion that they really believe all kinds of supernatural stories that surround Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il: birds singing in Korean and mourning their deaths, etc. They believe that the US sends food-aid to North Korea out of reverence for and worship of their leader, whom they themselves are forced to love. There’s no more twisted relationship dynamic than that. Think about it; forced to love. This is the essence of the Master-Slave relationship, but extended to an entire society.
What I’m saying is that the people of NK are not our enemies. They’re just slaves. I’m in favor of any solution that removes their manacles at a minimal expense of life. As far as wiping the whole country off the map --well-- I’ll leave that kind of talk to the North Korean despots and Iranian clerics.
I agree with a0cake in this matter. However, when the entire country takes up arms. There is no other option, in my opinion.
One thing you learn very quickly when you study history and International Relations is that the most foreign policy moves are intended for their domestic effect. The rhetoric and hostility coming out of NK is largely a device for the regime to maintain power. I’m not saying they’re not dangerous – far from it. But their rhetoric ought to be modulated through an understanding of the domestic dynamic. A US initiated war at this point, which apparently some people actually think is a good idea, would be an unmitigated catastrophe. Literally the worst move we could make.
There is always an option. We didn’t have to wipe Japan off the map and they were probably among the most fanatical enemies this country has ever faced.
If the NK civvies saw what life was really like in the south… First they wouldn’t believe it. But then they would very likely lose faith in their great leader.
I think if we just provided them with some sort of outside influence for a few years, and then a lot of guns, they could topple the dictatorship.
I have a great idea.
We make a giant movie projector and use the moon as a screen.
I envy their gun-free society. They truly are a role-model for the world
I heard from an acquaintance that is a navy nuke sub officer(fast attacks I think) that we may or may not always have 2-3 ballistic nuke boats hovering off of the north korean coast. This was 2-3 years ago he told me this, but I bet it still holds true today.
I’d be more impressed, if they could FEED North Koreans.

Nothing like a visit from Dear Leader to brighten up your day!
If its gonna happen, it better pop. I dont want to get recalled for some bullshit spy vs. spy stuff.
sent from mah gun, using my sights
The most dangerous people in the world are those with nothing to lose. NK makes me nervous. It really depends on what China does.
Pat
Describing them that way, I feel it may be more humane to put them out of their misery… ![]()
As long as there are people cowering in fear of him, Kim Jong Un will continue to dictate their lives.
…come get some?
Yeah OK. Nice propaganda for the locals. Means less to the rest of the world than the last turd I flushed.
Really, that’s almost precisely what we had to do to defeat Japan. After we utterly destroyed their military we firebombed their capital city, Tokyo in what is still the single most destructive bombing raid in History. Then we dropped an atomic bomb on one of their largest cities. After all that they didn’t bat an eyelash so 3 days later we had to drop a second nuclear bomb on another city.
Don’t under estimate fanatacism.
