Poor woman. This type of thing really boils my blood. There’s so much fail here it’s beyond disgusting. :bad:

On April 21, Carol Bowne from Berlin Township, NJ, applied for a license to own a handgun, which she wanted to protect herself from a former boyfriend against whom she had a restraining order.

On June 3—while still waiting for the state to give her permission to own a gun—Bowne’s former boyfriend, Michael Eitel, allegedly stabbed her to death in her own driveway.

According to the Courier-Post, after getting the restraining order, Bowne “installed security cameras and an alarm system to her home and began the months-long process of obtaining a handgun.” Bowne’s co-workers said, “She got a restraining order about a month ago, and right after that her car windows were broken.”

Bowne “had inquired” about the progress of her gun license request as recently as June 1, but the “application process typically takes two months or more as police collect information on the applicant, including fingerprints and reference checks.”

Eitel, Bowne’s former boyfriend, is “a convicted felon” who, as of Thursday, had still managed to elude authorities. He pleaded “guilty to a weapons offense in 2008 after being indicted in 2006 on a charge of aggravated assault with bodily injury. He received a five-year sentence for that offense, which neighbors said was related to an assault on a former girlfriend.”

This tragedy is one more example of the foolishness of putting a licensing requirement on the Second Amendment. Like all gun control, it empowers those with criminal intentions while making the vulnerable more vulnerable.

I’m not sure I could live in New Jersey. To be honest there are some great job opportunities available if I was willing to leave Texas to pursue them, I’m not really willing to.
I’m not sure how those in charge of places like New Jersey can live with themselves. It apparently hasn’t effect Chris Christy’s appetite.

As usual, I have a little different take on this situation. Perhaps it is because I took time to actually read the entire article.

A gun may or may not have helped her. This lady’s best chance of surviving the failed relationship was to not involve herself with a convicted felon in the first place - especially one whose prior offenses included prison time for beating a former girlfriend.

Thus, her pattern of poor decision making in choosing her companions and state of residence are far more proximal causes of her demise than NJ’s ridiculous gun laws.

According to the law, the FID process should take no more than 30 days. But the courts said that the law doesn’t matter and PDs can take as long as they wish. After Sandy Hook pistol purchase permits were taking 6months in some towns.

Plus, she was stabbed in her driveway. The gun in her bedroom dresser would not have helped and there is NO WAY in hell he would have been granted a carry permit. Well, she can get a carry permit now since there is a justifiable need lol. Too bad she had to die to demonstrate the need.

Tell me about it. I couldn’t get my CHL because i ran a stop sign 5 years ago… Now i have to wait till october before im eligible… And wait probably another year. It took texas a YEAR to tell me no… :mad:

What’s worse is that her having the handgun wouldn’t have made any difference since she would not have been able to bring it out of the house or carry on person.

I get your point; but it’s not as if everyone who has done time is honest and qualifies this info to future associates.

For all we know she had no clue of this guys past until it was too late.

Poor choice of where to live yes; but specifically due to the bonehead unconstitutional illegal laws. When laws don’t allow people the right to defend themselves; we blame the person? I agree you should up and leave shit states with awful laws; but many figure this out when it is too late; she was trying to get a gun and CCW to protect herself.

I blame all of us for allowing our corrupt and tyrannical governments to turn our right to keep and BEAR arms into a permission with waiting periods, registration lists and taxes that destroy our rights.

This is a failure of policy and a failure of “We the people”.

It’s sad how this woman is at fault in your opinion and not the fact that she has been turned into a slave who cannot excersise her God given and constitutional rights due to a tyrannical and bullshit government.

If you can logically blame this individual for her choice to live where she did; then it is just as easy to blame yourself, me and everyone else for allowing our elected officials to deny us our rights and turn us into victims in waiting.

It just gets better:

POS is dead by his own hands, and “Three state senators on Friday said they’d introduce a bill that would prioritize permit requests for people who held current restraining orders.”

Too little too late for her, and one shouldn’t need to be at the point a restraining order exists before Const Right is acknowledged, but for NJ, maybe a step in the right direction.

Kinda strange, I thought our Consititution said Our Right to Keep and Bear Arms Shall NOT be Infringed… she shouldn’t have needed a Permit in the first place.

With that said, she appeared to finally be finished with this guy and what happened to her is still a travesty. A shining example of how the state cannot and will not protect you.

What we (people in NJ) should do is take a note out of the Liberal playbook and lot let a good tragedy go to waste.

The woman’s family should sue the **** out of the State and Chris Christy for her death. It’s a direct cause of the Justifiable Need law. NJ law makers have blood on their hands and should be all marched into the middle or Trenton and Tar and Feathered. All Christy has to do is tell his AG to change the administrative code to say that Self Defence qualifies as Justifiable Need and we can all get CCWs. But he won’t cause he is an anti gun fat douch bag and his future replacement will be MUCH worse.

While I think women should be less naive in their decisions (speaking from personal experience as I’m the product of a single mother who had an uncanny knack for finding the biggest dirt bags in our little town until I got big enough to put them in their place… but many years of mental and physical abuse before I blossomed into my now full figure of 280lbs) this post pretty much sums up what involvement the government should have (or not have) in the situation.

Another reason why I’m a bit reluctant to throw my weight behind the deceased is because my experience with violent felons has taught me that their (ex)girlfriends tend NOT to be shining pillars of society. In fact, the mates of violent sociopaths tend to be borderline, pill popp’en, nut cases. Has anyone vetted this lady yet? Could it be that there was a reason for the delay? These are the question that I like to have answered before I go wrapping myself in righteous indignation over NJ’s treatment of 2nd Amendment Rights.

Because needing a permit to own a handgun in New Jersey isn’t enough of a reason to be wrapped up in righteous indignation over New Jersey’s treatment of the Second Amendment?

Hey, if somebody gets killed by a cartel in Mexico, is it their fault because they live in Mexico, too?

ETA: Mexico is having elections this year - and so far 18 people have been killed this year, 6 of them candidates for office and the remainder campaign workers. But I guess they should have remembered they were in Mexico before they were so stupid as to get killed.

I think that we can all agree that NJ is retarded. The question at hand is do we have enough information about the deceased to use this incident as a case study.

Well we can’t interview her now can we? I believe that’s the point he was trying to make. At some point even sociopaths deserve the god given right to protect themselves from other sociopaths they know mean to do them harm.

I think his comments should be taken into account for sure, but with the facts we currently have, I’ll give the woman the benefit of the doubt before I’ll give it to those in NJ deciding if she was worthy of a CCW. If something about the victim comes to light that might justify the delay, then that changes the equation. But I’ll go on NJ past history as my guide at this time. You’re mileage may vary.
