Is there anyone out there that uses a concealed vest for police work? If so what do you think of it?
How about finding out what he’ll be issued before calling it a piece of shit? There’s an idea.
Delete post some questions are too hard for some.
i would wait and see what he is issued . yes many depts are lowest bidder outfits . i would also check dept guidlines for wearing non issued equipment . my dept allows te wearing of privately bought armor , however they must be brought to the range and tested and approved before you are allowed to wear it on duty . i cuurently have a second chance and a point blank vest that i wear . i also augment the protection with a titanium plate and an extra soft plate in each vest .
Wait and see what he’s issued. Wait and see if he’s even allowed an alternative. Some issued gear is GTG, because the guys that spec and buy it know what they’re doing. A lot is “good-as”, “immediately available”, or bottom dollar.
US Armor here. Eagle Enforcers, V-Zeros.
I’m looking for gear suggestions here. Not advice on anything else.
You admit to knowing next to nothing about the subject, yet when people who do know about it say something, you complain?
I suggest you save your money and buy some Vagisil. You need it.

Delete. not worth the headache
Neither are you.
What a coward. Runs away like a child as soon as someone says something he doesn’t like. I bet the only uniform he ever wore was a girl scout uniform. Pussy.
I loved this thread. I’ve been watching it since yesterday because the premise was awesome…
I want to pick armor for someone else, who is going to be a cop, and I don’t know shit about the subject.
It had to be a winner.
ok ok. I’ll take the bait and repost. It seems that some didn’t quite “get” the question and evidently I’m a pussy and coward which is quite funny since we are on the internet.
So here you go.
Yes I have no experience with cop vests. All my vests have been for a different purpose and had to stop alot more than the police need protection for.
So now we have established that I don’t know a thing about this specific subject (hence the post asking for advice).
My good friend isn’t an internet posting type guy and, like many cops, wasn’t in the military or anything else even close before this. He is currently attending the police academy. If he does indeed have the option to wear the vest of his choice I’d like to pass on a couple suggestions from people that wear that type of vest.
Waiting for answers on what he will be issued and what exactly department policy is on the subject is certainly an option but I’d rather not wait.
I’ve always taken the mindset that it’s best to be prepared in the event that something happens. In this case the ability to choose what you want.
Having said all that things should be quite clear. Simply looking for vest recommendations from those that wear that type of vest.
His agency should be buying him armor. Are they not?
Hard to believe an agency wouldn’t, in this day and age, but I suppose there are a few.
Not so hard to believe. Some don’t provide it at all. Some bought armor once a long time ago. Some bought bad stuff and keep it in service, knowing it won’t stop bullets. Some provide an allowance, and no guidance on what to buy. Some buy good stuff and are proactive.
Anything is better than nothing, but there are lots of ways to go wrong.
Stick with level 2 or better. Stick with P-aramids. Avoid laminates and hybrids. No zylon. Get a custom fit by someone who knows what they’re doing. Ask what’s in the vest. If they don’t tell you, don’t buy. You can compromise and deviate, but it comes at a cost.
I bought from USA when I was un****ing some armor inventories. They were, and have been, exceptional to deal with. Others have good product, but that’s where I shop for now.
Tell your friend to wait and see what the department does. I would bet if they don’t provide issued vest they will have a state contract or grant program to provide vests at a reduced price. Always get a vest that stops your issued sidearm. I have had 5 or 6 vest over the years. Everyone started out with level II. My last two issued vests were level IIIA. Our department uses First Choice no other option. My last issued vest had zylon and was replaced with this the one I have. Look up Galls.com to get some ideas, but they are expensive. The main issue with vests is getting officers to wear them all the time. David
I am just curious what kind of vest you are talking about and what is was expected to stop???
Buck
The vests I’ve worn were of a more tactical nature and expected to defeat cartridges like 5.56 and 7.62X39. My specific choice of armor did a bit more than that, protecting agains some AP rounds. That of course is not expected or required in an everyday police vest. I hope this satisfies that curiosity Buck. Why do I feel like I’m being interviewed instead of trying to get a question answered?
I think you greatly underestimate the experience of the freuent posters on this site. Many if not most have seen combat overseas and of those quite a few have become or are street cops.
I think the reason for the additional questions was the question came off worded like you were super spec ops and we weren’t bright enough to properly answer your questions. You could have simply said, “my only experience is with the Interceptor, MTV, etc. so my knowledge of concealable vest is lacking, could you provide suggestions.” There.
Now, quite a few of the answers provided have indicated that he wait until it is known what he issued. If it is stated that often, there must be a reason for it. I, am going to state that same thing. Wait. Hell, being simply in the academy, he still has FTO and Probation to get through before he is in the clear. At a lot of departments officers are unable to alter any of what they carry and/or wear until after one of those two phases in their career. And to be honest, nothing is certain. Financially, would make the most sense to make sure he keeps the job. (Not putting him down, just how the job works.)
For the love of god. What’s a guy got to do to get a straight answer??
Here’s the question, one more time.
Ok ok. I’ll word it differently.
