NFA Form Help

Filling out the NFA form for an SBR and I have a question regarding caliber on the form. I am starting with a new lower and it is marked multi-caliber. What do I need to put on the form for caliber? My current barrel that I have for a AR Pistol is 5.56 and will be the first barrel to end up on the lower once it is approved but I would like to be able to put other caliber uppers on it in the future. Can I list multi-caliber on the form or do I have to put 5.56 and then file a change when when I get new barrels?

You cannot list multi caliber. Fill out the form with all the information from the rifle in it’s initial configuration, i.e. with the 5.56 AR pistol attached.

You can still switch between barrels/uppers as much as you want, you just need to retain the parts necessary to be able to return it to its registered configuration.

thanks, can the extra caliber also be an sbr barrel? or will that require a new sticker?

You can put any barrel of any length or caliber in any combination on your NFA-registered lower as long as you retain the ability to return it to the configuration listed on your Form 1/Form 4.

Multi is NOT a caliber, it is completely pointless that some manufacturers put it on the lower. You need to put down what caliber and barrel length you plan to build.

Changing the caliber later does not make a new SBR, so no new forms or tax. If you permanently change the configuration the ATF requests you notify them of the new caliber/barrel length.

Todd,

Thanks for making that quick and painless.

I thought you could only go to the length listed on your form 1’s or over. Say you write 10.5", you can go up but not under the length correct? Or am I mistaken.

I didnt know.

A short barreled rifle has a stock and is under 26" OAL or has a barrel less than 16". You must by law pay the transfer tax before you can legally possess one. Making the barrel of your registered, tax paid SBR shorter does not make a new SBR, so no new tax is required.

Any length barrel, shorter or longer doesn’t matter.

Oh nice. Thank you.

I put 10.5" on my forms knowing I was going to an 11", just in case I wanted to go shorter.

Someday I would like to try a 7.5". Im glad I dont need another stamp.

Thanks for your reply

Absolutely. I hate “multi” marked lowers as much as markm hates LWRC!

thanks for all of the responses and the info.

Apologies for reviving this thread, but the topic is relevant to a question that I was going to ask. For lowers that are marked “CAL - MULTI” have you included that engraved text in in 4h? Is that text considered “identifying data”?

Question 4c will of course have 5.56.
