New M4Carbine site, and newish 6.5 Creedmoor rifle…
I just bought a slightly used 6.5CM. It’s a JP Sauer Model 100 Atacama with a heavy .750" (19mm) 20" (510mm) factory spun barrel.
I have 200 Hornady 129 grain SST’s and 100 Barnes 127 grain LRX bullets and the hope is getting to shoot close enough together to use Hornady’s for wastage/paper punching and the more costly Barnes for game hunting.
I also have 200 new Starline SRP cases, and CCI 450 Primers for the same (cause I have over 8,000 CCI 450’s and only 500 or so LRP’s on hand, & I’m not buying more).
I have the following suitable powders for the 6.5CM:
3 lbs of H4350
2 lbs of RL-19
8 lbs of VV N-140
1 lb of Hodgdon 100HV
I figured I’d work my way down the powder list until I found a load that works well for both bullets.
So any thoughts, suggestions, or remarks??
Thanks.
I can speak with a little bit of experience, as I have a 6.5x47.
In testing, the Hornady SST bullets were not as accurate as a quality match bullet. My 6.5x47, with an 8 twist Bartlein, will shoot the SST around 1 MOA where the 123 SMK or 130 Berger are closer to 0.3 MOA.
H4350 seems to be THE powder for 6.5 Creedmoor and the 140 grain bullets. I don’t see why 4350 wouldn’t work well for the lighter bullets, but I would give N140 a try with them.
I really like Reloder 16 but is has become ridiculously priced. Currently testing N540 and 550 as a replacement.
MarshallDodge,
I guess I should have been more clear, but I’m not buying this rifle for match shooting. It’s going to be a found in a deer stand with me sitting on my butt behind it.
And I’ve owned a 6.5x47 Lapua (Heavy 26" barreled Custom Match Rifle), a 260 Rem (Tikka CTR 20") and a 6.5x55 (Ruger 77 22") at one time or another in my life. So it’s not my first 6.5 rodeo.
Both my 6.5x47 and the 260 loved the Berger 130 Hybrid OTM, but I not going to be chasing 1/2 MOA groups with Berger’s in this rifle. Of course I say that now…
However, it’s my first 6.5 Creed. As far as VV N140 goes it is far down on my list, as VV load data shows Max loads barely breaking 2550 FPS from a 24" barrel. I would like velocities above 2700 FPS threshold. And all the powders listed except VV N140 can make that mark.
But I’ll run some Quickload sessions with N140 just to be sure.
Thanks for you input.
Alright. What is it that you are asking for?
Marshall,
Why the hostility?? I was trying out the new M4Carbine site by posting, and seeing how it went. Then I answered you respectfully, posted two pictures to see how that goes with the new site, and then I thanked you.
So what’s your beef?
You read my response wrong if you took it as hostile.
I hope you enjoy your new rifle and take a ton of game with it
Having owned a 6.5 creedmoor for several years, if I were to do it again, 6.5 Swede would have been the better choice for me. A little more case capacity and a little more horsepower. I am not sure if it is the Bergara rifle or the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge, but i have worked way too hard getting decent precision out of this combination. The 6.5 swede was easy.
