The blame game is as relentless as it is hollow. Chicago now wants legal gun owners to pay for the cost to treat and incarcerate criminals. Even if it doesn’t pass, just that it can be seriously considered is alarming.
“Summers said gun violence costs the government in a number of ways, including the $143 a day it costs to keep someone in jail. Further, he said it costs $52,00 on average to treat a gunshot victim without insurance in the taxpayer-backed local hospital.”
Yep. Socilaist Worker’s Gun-free Paradise since 1982. RUMORS of ‘violence’ are part of an eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil right wing conspiracy. Only peace, love, and doobs abound now in Moscow on the Michigan!
Doobs are bad for the environment, man! They release deadly hydrocarbons and like, corrode the atmosphere! And drugs are bad for the children! Remember, we do it all for the children…
Unions are a lot like children
…I’m often tempted to beat them into submission!
Pshh…the constitution is for dead people and racists, remember? We don’t like that ratty old thing. Well, we selectively like it. The 1st amendment is good sometimes, and the 14th amendment is useful. We like the “necessary and proper” part, and “general welfare” sounds like a good statement. The rest is all bigotry and 200-some year old blather. Bad for the masses to know about such things.
Not so. Handguns (but never long guns) were essentially outlawed in the city limits of Chicago until 2010, after which they became treated the same way as any other non-NFA firearm. However, residents of the city of Chicago are required to register any firearm they purchase with their local Police Department Precinct (in addition to furnishing their Firearms Owner’s ID Card, or FOID, at time of transaction per IL state law). Moreover, it is illegal to buy or sell a firearm within the actual city limits unless you are law enforcement. If you think that’s bad enough, Cook County (the county in which the vast majority of Chicago resides) adds their own goofy restrictions prohibiting “assault” firearms and prohibiting purchase or ownership of magazines exceeding ten rounds.
The link makes it clear this idea is being entertained merely at the county level, thus sparing about 90% of the gun owning population of the state of Illinois, since most people who are actually interested in owning firearms know better than to live in Cook County in the first place. This is fortuitous because the likelihood of this insane tax becoming ordinance mirrors the degree of absurdity behind it.
I would suggest, however, that given the city and county’s fairly dire current financial situation, this may just be an attempt to try to bilk some quick cash from an already outrageously overtaxed populace to stave off the ever enlarging Credit Monster.
When looking for an Apartment I wouldn’t even consider one in the next county over which houses Austin. Fuck that county when it comes to self defense. Couldn’t imagine living in an ENTIRE STATE which was like that, and where the criminal has more consideration than their victims.
How about a corruption tax on all Illinois politicians? Makes much more sense than punishing law abiding Americans for exercising their constitutional rights.
