First of all, I don’t know if I am posting in the right category, so I’ll tell you what I’m looking for and someone can point me in the direction to ask the pointed questions I want to ask…
I’m looking at getting a new AR, but not sure if I want to buy or build, caliber, etc…

Just want to point out the yellow search button up to the top right. Will give you a multitude of threads with practically all the information you’d ever want. Caliber is something that you must decide on pertaining to your needs.
Building or buying is your choice & not something we can or can’t tell you to do. However, personal opinion is, decide fast before there are none left to buy, the 2nd rush, has begun.
I guess more specifically is I have x budget, looking for opinions/advice?

Ok, so “x” is around $1500, somewhat flexible, but nithing crazy either. What I’d like is a flat top receiver, collapsible stock, prefer no fixed front sight, rails instead of hand guards. I want a 300, 6.8, and 5.56, but know these will all have to wait…can I buy a dedicated 5.56 and the. Get an upper for the 300? So, that’s what I’m looking for.
$1500 will get you a Colt, DD, BCM, LMT or any number of high quality ARs.
If you really want rails with no fixed front sight, you could go with a DDM4V5. I had one and it was great. Had to sell it for funds.
Good luck getting anything right now though.

G&R had a v5 in 300, but that’s gone now.
It was right around your $1500 budget.
Does that budget include mags, optics, and other accessories?
I’d like for it to include optics, mags, etc…but I don’t think that’s feasible.
You could always get a Colt 6920 or 6720 for around $1000.
You won’t be able to get a rail at this price point, but you’ll get a damn good rifle. You can always add a rail later. I know you said you didn’t want the fixed front sight, but you might grow to like it. There’s nothing wrong with it for magnified optics or red dot.
Get an Aimpoint PRO for $400
That leaves you about $100 for mags, a sling, and a white light too.
Maybe not quite enough for all 3.
Might need to up your budget a tiny bit to get that white light.
Keep checking G&R, DSG, or Clyde’s Armory for those Colts.
They go out of stock quick.

My brain is still in last week.
Cousin went to three gun shops here in Columbus Ohio, got to the last one and asked if they had any AR rifles. They had 2 Sig’s left in the in the back at $1900 apiece. He said I’ll take one, the guy standing next to him said, and I’ll take the other.
I’ll say this for anyone new reading - if you don’t have an AR right this minute, then it’s virtually pointless to buy one unless you’re filthy rich and don’t care about your money. An “AR” is more of a system than an entity - you’ll need the rifle, lots of magazines, and lots of ammo - all of which are going to run you 10x what they would normally cost.
Even if a ban does get passed, it’s weeks or months from being implemented. Wait a few weeks and see if the prices stabilize. Supply will spool up - it always does (whether it does in time before the ban is another question).
This is the advice i just gave my friend. My opinion is the supply will come back but you might not see shops selling rifles under MSRP now. Atleast you might be able to get what you want instead of settling for a DPMS etc. for the price of a quality rifle.
