New to optics: Which reticle?

I recently ordered a Falcon Menace 4-14X44 optic via a group buy for my DPMS .308 carbine. I will mount it via an ADM Recon quick release mount.

The invoice says mil/mil which is good, no? While I thought I was getting a ML16 reticle, it appears to say extended long range mil dot on the invoice. Having exactly no experience with optics (other than taking the occasional shot with someone elses’ rifle at the range) I am not sure which reticle will best suit a noobs’ first rig with which he hopes to get basically competent at 500 yards and under. Does it matter?

I would appreciate any advice you guys might have. Thanks.

Mil/Mil means that your reticle is in mils as well as your windage/elevation adjustments. This makes it easier compared to Mil reticle/MOA adjustments.
You bought a good scope, I wouldn’t worry too much about the adjustments/reticles for now, except note that you will need windage / elevation data in MILS NOT MOA. Zero the rifle, shoot it and do some reading on snipershide about scopes, reticles, range estimation, etc…
