I just ran across an ad for this show, supposed to premier Oct. 21 on Showtime. Apparently it’s a reality TV show about some guy working in a Denver gun shop (I think it’s called The Shootist) and the customers coming in to buy firearms.
There are some clips available for screening on Showtime’s website and a brief synopsis of the show. Anybody know anything about it?
I don’t have Showtime so I guess I’ll have to wait for somebody else to watch it tomorrow night and post a review.
buddy of mine told me about it, i guess its supposed to have a positive spin on the industry (we’ll see how that goes). And go figure, I have HBO and Cinemax, but not Showtime…sigh
I think it goes without saying that only the most “colorful” customers will get screen time. I just hope it’s fair. I just better not see any “True Tales of the FFL” plot lines.
Well I’ll weigh in on this since the Shootist is right down the road from my house and I frequently fire at their indoor pistol range. I have never purchased anything other than range time and ammunition form them though…that said…
It is one of the smallest (and grungiest) shops in Colorado. Why they chose it I have no clue. One of the nicest (though not friendliest) shops in the state is right down the road and probably would have been much more suited for TV. Not to mention that the family that owns and operates The Shootist are…how to put this lightly…probably not exactly the type of people you would want to put on national TV to forward your cause. Just saying…
Still though from what I have seen and heard from them I don’t believe it is going to be a necessarily anti-gun show. I was told that many of the people on the film crew were gun owners and enjoy the sport themselves. I think it will be nothing like the 20/20 hit piece we saw last year.
My favorite is probably Jensens, though I have gotten some shitty attitudes from some of the staff (though never Ray nor the owner), including one gal in particular over the past year.
I get along with the owner of Green Mountain Guns really well and he always remembers me and greets me when I come in which is nice. Usually asks “Blow anything up today?” or something to that effect. Most of their staff is ignorant and rude though, and their prices are either good, or less than mediocre depending on the item. S&W stuff is usually priced well.
5280 usually has a lot of fun stuff, though they really need to “get with the program” when it comes to tactical shooting since that is what they seem to cater to in their store. Complete ignorance on modern pistol, carbine, and shotgun techniques. They also seem to have gone from Colt, LMT, DD AR15s to DPMS, Oly, etc. which is really disappointing. Also their “no dry firing” rule is really stupid and annoying. However the guys that work there all know me and are very friendly and accommodating when I come in.
Shootist is nothing more than a range to me.
The Firing Line can burn in a fire for all I care.
Reality TV to be truly successful MUST have CONFLICT and Over-the-top Iconic Cartoonesque Characters. If the show truly was pro gun then it is intentionally trying to fail. The producers would have to count on or contrive to have a bunch of flaky, laughable anti-gunners passing thru the gunshop which we know is not going to happen, so they must be counting on flaky, laughable gun buyers to make the show interesting. If they do not have conflict or bigger than life characters then the guns would have to be the stars and you can imagine how they would be portrayed… 600 rounds per minute and one shot can cause your head to pop off. The show will be bad for us or tank:(
Just watched it, thought it was pretty lame. The only customer that seemed to know what he was doing was the pastor, oh and the NRA chick. There were plenty of flakes though. Like the guy in the preview who walks in and says he’s looking for an “assault rifle” and proceeds to tell the host he works for the post office. Then there was the guy who said “the quickest way to my wife’s heart is with a scalpel…”
