New Scuba diver gear purchase advice

Decided to escape the Mountain weather for a couple weeks, flew down to Island of Guadaloupe. Besides the usual tourist stuff, beach, Canyoneering etc. Took a SSI scuba course working on dive’s 7 & 8 today,. Besides mask, snorkel, fins/booties and 3 mm wetsuit what gear would be a good purchase or just rent stuff ? Have SSI Scuba and Open Water certifications, workin on Perfecting Bouyancy next dives. This may become my retirement hobby once I leave Jackson Hole

I dunno that much about it, but at one time my Dad was a Salvage Diver and Underwater Welder.

I would really be inclined to make as many of my purchases as used rather than putting out large green at this time.

Trying to get rid of some of the heavier Gear is not easy.

Forgive the pun, but don’t “dive right in” buying gear.

For one, you are new and excited about this new experience but how often are you going to be diving in the near future? I don’t know anything about the dive scene in Jackson Hole. I bet there are some folks doing dives but….? I do know that diving at Flaming Gorge is a thing. My guess is that at least for the time being you will be traveling to dive. Traveling with a lot of gear kind of sucks.

Also, you don’t even really know what you like yet. What type of BC do you like and best suits the type of diving you intend to do? What water temps do you expect to be diving in? Lots of questions you don’t know the answers to right now.

If you really feel you want to make some purchases I would recommend sticking to some basics until you know more about what will ultimately suit you. Maybe a mask, a skin or thin suit, perhaps your own fins (especially if your feet are large or hard to fit). Your own computer will be a good purchase. Do some looking around and ask other divers before buying, but a computer is quite often the only piece of gear traveling divers bother to carry with them.
