It’s getting:
DD fixed front/rear sights
Muzzle device TBD - split between several options right now
VFG of some type - probably a TangoDown stubby
No optics are planned at the moment.
The weight is very nice - the MI rail is really light, and the balance point with a loaded 30-round mag is still somewhere around the middle of the mag well.
Finished it out today with a set of DD iron sights and a DPMS levang compensator I scavenged from my SBR. The SBR will spend most of its time with my rimfire suppressor on it anyway…
MMkay, so - I lived a day with the DD sights and while I like the idea, I wasn’t satisfied with them on this gun. I scavenged the flip-ups and EOTech from my SBR and switched out the DD sights. I like them on the SBR, which will be getting a suppressor in a month or so (hopefully).
Here’s the build as-is, with the now-noseless SBR.
I also torqued everything down today, staked the castle nut, etc.
How is the weight? I just finished a build with a Troy TRX standard rail and I am not happy at all with how heavy it is. I have a similar build with a DD Lite rail and the difference is night and day.
Weight and balance would be similar to a standard carbine with average carbine rails on it. The MI SS-series is incredibly light-for-length. I haven’t beat it with a baseball yet, so I don’t know if strength has suffered.
It is definitely not nose heavy, which is a good thing. The balance point with a loaded 30-round mag is right around the mag well.
How is the fit and finish on the rail? Did you buy the trim ring? If so could you post a pic of it? I am planning to get the 15" SS for my 6.8 project.
thanks!
Fit and finish are great, but the color isn’t going to hold up long term, it scratches pretty easily. Just a good excuse to hit it with some krylon camo eventually.
Yes, I bought it. Excuse the shallow depth of field, but this shows the cap pretty well.
