The governor said she wants to crack down on crime in her address. She said this will include hiring and training 1,000 law enforcement officers across the state. However, she also said that she wants to take further gun control measures in hopes of curbing gun crime.
“This fight also requires that we step up what we’re doing to address the sickening scourge of gun violence that has infected our nation,” Grisham said in her address. “Over 1,000 guns are stolen every year in Albuquerque alone. We all know that we cannot keep our people safe if weapons of war continue to flood our neighborhoods.”
After mentioning that gun theft statistic, Grisham laid out her entire gun control agenda.
Here is what she said:
“That is why I am calling for a ban on assault weapons. I am calling for an end to the state loophole on straw purchases of guns because people with a history of violence should not be able to exploit the system to get a firearm. I am calling for safe storage reforms that impose penalties on anyone who fails to secure an unattended firearm and leaves it accessible to an unsupervised minor. And I am calling for legislation that would allow victims of gun violence to bring civil suits against firearm manufacturers. If we are bold and clear in our knowledge that now is the time to do the right thing, we can save lives and protect futures. I am determined to succeed, and I will not let up until New Mexico is the safest state in the nation.”
Grisham never explained what she wants to see classified as assault weapons.
The term assault weapon does not have a broadly agreed-upon definition. The Merriam-Webster dictionary website defines an assault weapon as, “any of various automatic or semiautomatic firearms.”
A spokesperson for the governor’s office could not immediately be reached for comment late Thursday morning to specify what her preferred assault weapons ban would entail.
The bill currently pending basically defines anything semiautomatic as an ‘assault weapon’. I don’t think it’ll go anywhere in that form, but who knows.
They’re trying to ram a lot sh#t through everywhere, both in the USA and abroad. Canada, France, lots of places. Almost as if privileged, monied oligarchs are increasingly frightened by the thought of armed people for some reason … imagine that.
Quick look through the bills pending for NM yields the following:
HB9: Safe storage, criminalizes allowing minors to access firearms
HB50: 9-round mag limit, no grandfathering
HB72: Bans “automatic converters” i.e. bump stocks, forced reset triggers, etc.
HB100: Mandatory 14-day waiting period for all transfers
HB101: Assault weapon ban, no grandfathering
SB44: Prohibits possession of firearms at poling places
SB116: 21 to buy semi-autos
SB171: Bans “Assault Pistols” and all NFA items
And there is also HB164, which is a constitutional carry bill
Just read through some of those; any AR or AK would be gone, the way it’s worded any semi auto pistol capable of taking a verboten mag could be banned, and even a rimfire with tubular mag such as a Marlin 60 that holds over 10 rds too. Sheesh, I can’t imagine that turd will pass.
These F-ing clowns aren’t concerned about crime because there was over 100,000 hard drug OD deaths in our Country from hard drugs coming across Joe Biden’s and the extreme Democrat Communist Party’s open southern border. What a joke. LOL !!!
When the Covid lockdowns were going on, a few restaurants stayed open. She sent the state police to shut it down and they went in to find all of the local pd and sheriff’s deputies in there eating lunch… :haha: Southeastern NM does not like her and she knows it, yet billions of sweet oil dollars pour into Santa Fe from this region.
Throwing half a dozen or more outrageous demands on the table and calling us unreasonable and unwilling to compromise. They’re coming after more of the pie that was always ours.
The safe storage, mag ban, “assault weapon” ban, NFA ban, and 14-day waiting period bills all advanced out of committee on a party line vote. The hearings were mostly a formality with opposing testimony largely ignored (to no one’s surprise, really). There were even a couple dem committee members that made statements essentially stating that these weren’t going to have any legitimate effect on crime, but they voted to advance them anyway.
And, in typical Dem fashion, all of the bills that proposed actual crime control and criminal justice reform were quickly tabled.
A couple weeks ago, I thought that most of this nonsense would die, but tbh, at this point, I fully expect it to ALL get rammed through and signed into law.
Nobody here is going to comply with any of this, so at least there’s that…
