If I had access to the server I could probably rebuild them all in a couple of steps. Until then they have to be done by hand.
It’s a good bet that what happened when the migration happened was the imgur rate limited the server since it was downloading thousands of images and that’s not cool.
What should be done is configure Discourse to download all of those external images locally so that if they disappear from imgur (or wherever else) it won’t matter since you’ll have your own copy.
If the best ya got is to play word games with what this platform clearly calls “Forums”, “Forums”… then your next answer is someone else did a bad job… I can see where this is going… never mind.
Here’s an example of where they are still called “categories”:
I wasn’t trying to be pedantic so much as be careful about how things might be confusing.
You asked a question. That’s the answer. I do not control the past, and it’s going to be hard to clean up at least some of the things that were done wrong, which I was prepared to fix (and at least some of which I’d already written code that did fix them).
I also answered the question that you didn’t ask, which is “can anything be done” and I answered, cautiously, in the affirmative, and fixed a handful of posts in that topic, to make sure that it looked like my solution would work. And I provided evidence that at least in most cases, those broken images can and will be fixed. That’s how things are going to go if I’m allowed to do them.
You know, I discovered the site back in 2011, been pretty much a lurker (compared to my post count) all these years. Most site administrators & moderators have some degree of attitude, because it’s the internet. M4carbine.net was (is?) no exception to this, in reality it was pretty high. That being said, it was no big deal to me, I had to deal with it everyday in the real world with my business. But getting back to the issue, the site is dying. Post counts have been going down the past couple years, but it’s happening with many, many other sites as well. But this horrible “update” has just hastened it along. It looks terrible, it’s not easy to navigate, endless scrolling sucks, etc…
I’ll keep checking in occasionally, but it appears that most members have moved on.
I actually feel bad for the new owners, they are losing a great resource all because someone recommended some shitty software. I don’t foresee a bunch of new “Discourse Rocks” gun buyers coming along and saving the day.
Agreed. I can’t get into my old account, which means the section of the site listing STICKMAN should probably be deleted.
The SOLGW drunk guy who made threats to me and wanted to kill cops doesn’t help this board even a tiny bit. Granted this was years back, and likely around the time he was arrested IIRC, but it doesn’t help me want to post here.
If it was just hear say from one person I could write it off, but it was to me on IG via IM, which puts him in a very small group of people in the firearm community that I have no use for.
I’ll point out that this was a few years back, but that isn’t the sort of thing that I consider to be acceptable regardless of whatever issues a person has.
Just a thought but it looks like the admin has been working specifically on helping people get their accounts restored. If you haven’t looked into it, they can probably fix it.
First I’ve heard of a guy from SOLGW getting drunk, making threats and getting arrested. Was he just an employee or an owner / manager?
I was lucky; my account came right back with no issues. I still come here every day and check “new” stuff, but it’s still hard to hang out for any amount of time. Maybe that’s good, maybe bad. I wrote a thing here and there and liked posting pics and interacting a bit, but as they say, there are more important things to spend my time on, I guess. Kinda sad that the “update” was anything but that. Should have just refreshed the servers and left shit alone, LOL I could have posted a link but just do a search on SOLGW owner and DWI, pops right up.
Steyr, right now the main fix looks like “transfer old posts and usergroup credentials to new account.” This is part of why I try to encourage operators of any board I’m on considering a migration to post reminders at a month before Go Time to make sure users’ account emails are up to date in case an account recovery is needed.
Even then, there’s one with decades of historical data that I fully expect to not come back from its current migration because the owner is largely absentee “phone it in” and couldn’t be arsed to take simple steps mitigating Known Issues.
I also recall Mike acknowledging that he was an out of control shithead, apologizing for it, straightening his act up and attempting to make amends for his actions.
Mike has owned his past issues and made significant strides to overcome them. He is one of the biggest LE supporters (sorry jshbke) and runs a fantastic company. This forum sucks now, but dragging Mike down for his past when his present is so rock solid seems pretty crappy.
It is slowly picking up life, not quite to where it used to be but improving. There are a small number of us who are fairly regular posters (you see most of the replies coming from that group) but it is refreshing to see a new account or an “old” M4C poster throw something out there.
