New Kahr CM9 vs. Ruger LC9 (pics)

I just got back from picking up my new Kahr CM9. I took some pics of it next to my Ruger LC9 for comparison. The LC9 holds 7 rounds in the mag and the Kahr holds 6.

The Kahr lacks the LC9’s magazine safety, loaded chamber indicator, horrific double action pull, and is smaller plus fits my hand much better. I much prefer the features (or lack thereof) of the Kahr 9mm pistol over the LC9. If the Kahr runs 100% with my defensive ammo, the LC9 will be retired.

I’ll post a full range review hopefully this weekend.

Good grab, do you have a weight for each loaded up? I just picked up the CM9 today myself.

I haven’t weighed them yet, I’ll have to do that this weekend.

The LC9 is 17.1 oz dry.

The Kahr is 15.9oz dry.

Since the Kahr carries one less round, it will stay lighter than the LC9, obviously.

I picked up a CW9 a few weeks ago for a new carry pistol and I absolutely love it! I’ve been looking at a pocket gun, and I think the CM9 would be a great choice. I’m not a fan of any of the compact rugers, so this thread helps persuade me even more! Look forward to hearing more about your CM9 in the near future. Now get out and shoot it!!

Not sure if this is allowed or “frowned” upon here but may i ask what you paid for your Kahr???

I retired my PF9 to the dusty shelf in my safe and been carrying my LCP for pocket carry but during the winter had no issues with my trusted M&P9c
But with the warmer weather coming back I had my eye on one of those LC9… till i got to hold and wow it was soooo much bigger than
i think they should/could have made it.

and being a lefty do not want a manual safety.

Sadly the Kahr’s i’ve held cost the same as my M&P and LCP and a few mags!!

sorry again if it’s a no no to ask what you paid out the door.

Thanks

(oh and BTW GREAT pics!! thanks!!)

I bought one from gtdist.com for $399, so right at $425 total including shipping and transfer.

For others who were as ignorant as I was about the differences between the CM9 and PM9:

wow…that Kahr looks tiny.

Ive been on the hunt for a true “pocket 9mm” and that looks like it would work.

thanks for the pics

Given that the Kahr PM9 series has already had some debate as to whether it was adequately reliable for carry, I’ll be interested to see if the CM9 series–which cuts further corners in quality compared to the PM9 series–turns out to be reliable. BTW, I like PM9’s and own one, just curious how well these “value” versions will hold up.

I’ve had some limited positive experience (and no real negative) with the Kahrs but at this point I am very interested in the LC9, unfortunately they are not available around here yet.

The LC9 looks to be more the same size as the CW9…Picked up a CM9 on Friday to go with my CW9… Got in 200+ rounds on Sunday. Only problems was when I tried to use the CW9 mags… The bullets wanted to jam on the feed ramp… I think it was because the mags were being pushed forward…

I’M a new Ruger LC-9 owner and at first I hated the slide safety, and the load chamber indicator but I can attest that the LC-9 has been 100% reliable right out of the box. If one were to believe INTERNET reports on the LC-9 there are numerous reports from other owners mirroring my account.

The Rugers trigger is very smooth with no stacking but it is long but not difficult to learn. The Rugers sight are just about perfect and the front sight can be changed out to accommodate height adjustment for your carry load.

The one thing I have found with the CM-9 is that with its short grip its a bear to control during rapid fire and that it can be ammunition sensitive. Kahr states the pistol needs between 200 to 500 rounds to break in but the one I put 1000rds Thu never got the memo and just would not run right.

Between the two I found the Ruger to be the better shooter with just a very slight increase in size and weight with total out of the box reliability.

I’m in the oddball camp with PhilaPD. I did the online comparison and ended up buying the LC9 for my mother who is wanting a CCW pistol. Price was a major factor, but ergonomics and reliability were important considerations too. I’ve felt that looooooong trigger pull and am going to instruct her not to carry with the safety engaged. I just don’t see the need for it. Thanks for the brief review PhilaPD. We must be weirdos to like a reliable, lightweight 9mm that doesn’t break the bank.

I love them.

I picked up two about 2 months after they were released. I had a P9 Covert (aka PM9 long slide) and just could not get used to that ultra-short grip and Kahr trigger. My LC9’s have both been totally reliable and are a joy to carry. I am also not a fan of Ruger’s redundant safeties, but they do not seem to effect how I shoot or carry the LC9’s.

Nice looking pistol. It’s on my short list to replace my S&W 640SC.

I have had a PM9 for a while now and can offer a couple of things that work for me that would work for the CW9.

First, Brooks Agrip made a huge difference to me for this specific weapon. Would recommend you buy the 5x8 sheet rather than gun specific pre-cut. Just cut out a paper pattern like you want, and then cut the sheet. The pre-cut pattern has to be trimmed and by the time you do that, just get the sheet and you’ll get two wraps out of it.

Second Pearce makes a grip extension that also made a huge difference. Kahr has a 7 round mag that extends and works about the same. But to me the Peace conceals better, yet still makes a big difference in control.

Third, the Galco angle glove (with optional strap) has become my go-to rig for hot weather carry.

But the absolute biggest thing, before you shoot it, strip it, de-burr it, lube it (I prefer grease on the slide rails) and work that action as many times as you can. Then go shoot the 200 round break in… and another hundred or two for good measure.

I am very happy with my PM9. It takes some work out of the box, but I’d do it all over again.

Nice looking little 9. I was thinking about getting an LC9 or similar so I’ll be watching this thread.

I hope my wife get the CM9 for my birthday next month.

I’ve had my PM9 for about 3 years now. I’m very satisfied with this pistol and its performance.

If the CM9’s prove to be as good as the PM9’s, I may have to get into another Kahr.
