I’m new here on this forum after a bit of a wait for approval. so first off i’d like to say Hello.
I went to the range w/ a few friends in NC a while back. We shot the KRISS(Vector), and a 9mm. Ever since I’ve caught the bug something fierce :D.day in and Day out looking, researching and delving more into the culture and Sport of firearms.
I wanted to look into purchasing a rifle hopefully in the near future. I would like a system that can be used as a normal rifle, and still be able to “reach out and touch somebody” as you all put it and I’ve seen on a couple of other places if i want/need to.I’d be happy with a good medium.
I’d like to build the system if i can because 1) it holds a wealth of knowledge all its own about the system 2) i like to work with my hands and 3) its usually cheaper than buying a complete system.But for the right price i would purchase a complete Rifle.
in basic terms i guess I’d guess the things I’d like would be :
1/7 Twist 18" barrel
4-way FFR
flat top receiver
Mid/Rifle length Gas System
Accurate as possible for what I’m trying to achieve

but with optics and without the stopper thing on the grip.
I’m not sure of many Companies tract records and quality of their products. Was hoping to hear from the community on manufactures and reliability. Also from that list is there anything that i missed that has to do with the core workings of the system? Aesthetics aside

I was in the same boat you were a few months ago but I reached out to a fellow M4 poster who knew his shit and he set me straight. You say you want something that can be used as a “normal” rifle … Well you opened a can on that one, your opinion of normal is guaranteed not the same idea of “normal” to many of the advanced and elites that inhabit this forum… Ill give you the same advice that was given me…
For your first AR buy a complete or at least a complete upper and lower, then get to know the internals and operations. You will save yourself a crap load of frustration and time. I would recommend staying with the more reliable AR manufactures, be it a Colt 6920, BCM and last but not least Daniel Defense there are a few more but these will do just fine.
The Colt is prob your best bet in a great AR that you can get to know and realize the upgrades you want to do later. I was recommended a Daniel Defense M4V1 they are a tad on the pricy side but many upgrades that one would most likely do eventually so that’s what I went with and I could not be happier with the rifle. Well I’m not going to get into it any further I gave you a start, dump that DPMS shit, kick back, use the search function, research those rifles, and listen more then you speak, the people on here know their stuff and its amazing how much I’ve learned from this forum.
Will be very accurate with good ammo, and not be too long and heavy to be able to do the up close stuff. I wouldn’t build my first AR personally as you need to get tools to assembly it properly.
“Normal rifle” and “reach out and touch someone” are quite vague descriptions of a rifle’s purpose. Could you define your purposes for this build? Will this be ran with magnified optics or RDS? Do you plan on running match/quality ammo to squeeze accuracy out of the rifle or mostly just ball ammo? …etc, etc, etc.
Just curious… Have you any experience with this upper? Or a similar BCM upper? In terms of accuracy, how did it perform?
1)Purpose- By " Normal rifle" i mean it should be able to engage anything within its true median effective range which i believe is 0-300m correct me if I’m wrong. Mulling over it I’d like the build to be more of a “sniper system” so to say.Out to 500-700M ish. Though i feel that, that nation may be misplaced.Id like it to be able to reach out to those distances but still be able to function within CQC.
2)Optics- Seeing as the build would be Range/Accuracy based I would like an actual rifle scope with chevrons or mil-dots systen.I was thinking PS0-1.But would like to have a RDS/Holo sight too. Both on quick change rails?
3)I’d plan on running Quality/Match ammo to get the most out of it.But May run ball time to time.

A normal rifle has plenty of reach. With a good barrel, it will do so accurately. It doesn’t need to be a long barrel or a heavy profile barrel. A skinny barrel will have the same range as a fat one of the same length.
What counts most is the type of sights used. Get a basic, 16" carbine with a good quality standard or lightweight barrel profile and start shooting it at various ranges. As you do so, you will learn what type of sights will work best for what you plan to do. This is how my carbine started, just a very basic configuration
Because I was primarily interested configuring it for defense and eventually taking carbine classes, I mounted an Aimpoint H1 on it along with a sling & weapon light
Even with just the Aimpoint, I’m confident taking shots several hundred yards off. Even so, by simply changing the optic to a variable scope, I know it work well all the way out to 600 yards or more. If I switch from bulk blasting ammo to good quality ammo with bullets in the 70 gr range, it will do even better.
Don’t over think it. As long as the AR has a good quality barrel (and most do) the choice of sights is more important than barrel profile, length or trying to optimize the rifle configuration. With the flat top, sights can be swapped to fit the need
So just concentrate on a good Base Ar. then worry about specializing it after I’ve got my bearings straight. If i get good with it i may look into some competition shooting.
More specifically- Get a basic rifle and shoot it. Actually shooting the rifle will teach you much about what works and why; and what is just a gimmick. Until you actually use the rifle, you are just guessing
I realize the holiday shopping season is upon us, but I don’t know of many malls where you would need to sniper out to 700m. Hopefully some of the more advanced and elite inhabitants of this forum will chime in and enlighten us with their tactical wisdom.

But seriously I know as a Civilian there feasibly wouldn’t come a time for me to actually shoot at that distance outside of wishful target Practice .The 600m the Cartridge is able to reach is plenty enough. but i think it may be cool if it can just in case, or i decide to do long distance competition shooting if there is a thing.

What is the practical difference between the two? Not barrel length or profile. Not the stock. Not the handguard. Not the trigger. It’s the sights. Swap the sights between the two and the carbine would be a better choice for precision shooting
The advice MistWolf gives has been given here many times over the years. Start basic and work from there. That advice served me well and saved me a ton of money. Once I learned how to operate my carbine the “wants” dropped off quickly.
The guys will tell you Colt, BCM & DD and rightfully so. Noveske has a good rep and are expensive. Check the thread about the new Sionic. I personally have experience with Colt, PSA, Bushmaster and RRA. I can can recommend the Colt and PSA (with FN barrel) without hesitation. The carbine in the above photo is a PSA

In the interest of Christmas peace and harmony I will spell it out for you quickly. Buy a Daniel Defense, BCM, Colt or Noveske and you will have a quality rifle you won’t have to question.
To start you don’t really need an optic. A decent set of sights like a Daniel Defense rear combined with a FSB will do. If you have the money, an Aimpoint T-1 is a great way to go.

AKDoug is right. I forgot to add that you should do your research and verify any recommendations given. The rifle you choose is your responsibility and you have to live with that choice.
