I am in the market for a new colt, want the 6920 but have found a new sporter lightweight 223 and am curious of the differences in the 2 if there is any. I did a search here and some say they are the same others not so much. The sporter is brand new unfired and I can get it for 900 bucks. If I am posting anything wrong here remember i said i was new so be gentle. :sarcastic:
The light weight is just a lighter barrel contour, and saves about 0.7lbs over the 6920. I would prefer the 6720 LW to the 6920.
Are you looking at it locally in Colorado for $900?
Cameron
Thanks for the response and yes it is local and being unfired I thought it was a pretty good deal. Are there any drawbacks to the lighter barrel or is it all kinda the same, am considering other options but the price is fairly attractive.
For a semi auto AR there is no real draw back to the LW barrel profile. The 6920 has a heavier barrel and the cut out for the M203 which are not useful to us.
I would get the 6720 if it is in good shape. Do they have more of them in stock than just the one you are looking at? I am in Colorado and have been thinking about a 6720 for awhile.
Cameron
Its through a friend of mine, and he bought it and never used it, so the sporter lightweight is considered the 6720???
That is the current designation.
Colt Carbines 1
Colt Carbines 2 (shows the 6720)
Do you know when his was manufactured? It could have a different stock and a different roll mark than the current 6720.

If its in good shape with a low round count, I would pick it up. I am saying that cause I am thinking of picking up either one of these…

or one of these…

Your second one looks exactly like this one except with a carry handle and a different front end. It is new in box unfired from what he says. No reason to doubt him.
Remember that Grant or G&R Tactical fame probably has these rifles in stock.

Check to see if its a “Talo” edition. If it has the carry handle, it is probably just the AR6720.
looks more like the 6721 from what i can see. will have more info soon if he hasn’t already sold it, waiting for him to get back to me.
Just to be clear…
It has a 4-rail forend and a detachable carry handle or a permanent one?
not sure yet, looks fixed but don’t know it says
sporter
lightweight tm
223
on the side
What do the barrel markings look like? If there is a “1:9” it is a 6721, if there is a 1:7 it is a 6720. Does the barrel have a thin profile or a notch for a grenade launcher to be attached?
Correct, the most important pieces of information you need to know from here are:
Detachable or fixed carry handle?
Barrel twist rate (1:7 or 1:9)?
The lower receiver markings aren’t as descriptive as a picture, or the above info would convey.
In a perfect world: 1:7 with the detached CH (i.e. a 6720). Next best is the 6721 with the 1:9 barrel, which is truly fine for what it is, since you probably won’t be terribly pressed to run bullets heavier than 62gr anyway.
It may be a 6520, or hell it may be an SP1 carbine. There’s several things it could be with the lightweight barrel. Try to get a picture of it and post that.
If his description of the rollmark is correct, then it’s probably this.

Just going by the fourth photo.
Another better photo.http://www.armslist.com/posts/372510/minneapolis-minnesota-rifles-for-sale--colt-sporter-lightweight-ar-15-rifle--223--556
Yuppers that is pretty much exactly what she looks like, fixed carry handle and all.
i would personally go with a 6920. Knowing how to use irons is great, but limiting yourself to only irons…or some weird optic setup that sits on top of a carry handle would definitely leave me desiring for more in the future.
but that’s just me.
Thats a very good point and thank you for the input, for another buck or buck and a half can get a 6920. You folks have been most helpful here and about the nicest folks on any forum I have ever been on. I will be sticking around and posting some pics once I finally get one, gotta get one soon in case obumer gets lucky and gets reelected, things may change in short order. Thanks again everyone
