New Grey Glock Finish Sucks.

This new glock grey finish does not look as durable,
I have been carrying my OD26 Glock with the new grey finish I can see a rusty color in between the cocking serration that is bothering me.
It looks dull and rough compared to the old telfon like coating.

I agree, I have owned 5 Glocks, and none of them have looked as cheap as this new batch. The slides on the one’s I have been seeing look like pot metal. Just horrible compared to M&P or XD slide.

My glock 26 has the newer gray finish which was built at the end of September, my only complaint as of now is the finish does show scratches/surface more easily, otherwise after 4 months of carrying i have no rust issues.

Can you post a pic? Is this a Gen 3 or 4 model? Has there been a change in the tenifer finish as of late? I don’t own a Glock as of now so I may be a little behind.

I love how they are so quick to say its an improvement.
Thank god I bought my 19 and 21SF before the change over to the “new and improved coating”…supposedly the tennifer is the same however i am starting to doubt that.

My understanding is that the tenifer is embedded into the metal, and that the outside finish isn’t meant to provide any protection to the gun. Case in point being Glock owners that have their slides polished, by taking the black coating off, and do not experience any rusting problems.

I submit that if you are experiencing rust on your slide, then it must be a deficiency in the tenifer process. I would contact Glock Inc.

Best,

Dave

Are these new Glocks the ones being made in the USA? If so my suspicion is that they’re performing the Tenifer differently. I’m sure someone will break out the “Tenfier/Melonite/Tufftride are all the same” quote. While it’s true that they’re all the same insofar as they’re all ferritic nitrocarburization, there is more than one way to perform this process, and it can definitely be performed improperly.

I thought the US made Glocks were not being sold in the US.

My gun says made in Austria
The finish and the tennifer are two different things but the new finish is grippier and an improvement which it is not.
The barrel is now grey to but that actually might be an improvement

The new generation Glocks are still Tennifer treated, but just like the Generation 3 series, they have a coating over the Tennifer. Steel that has gone thru the Tennifer treatment process has a gray/silver color. Glock then coats the slide with a black oxide color finish. As many have stated, when the black finish wears away, the Tennifer still protects the slide from rust, wear, etc. It’s unfortunate that Glock as not gone back to their original finish (still Tennifer but with other components that gave the finish a black color that over the years slowly dulled to a dark gray, while proving almost indestructable). In contrast, the Melonite QPQ metal treatment (nitro-carburization with multiple quench and polish steps), while providing a very hard surface, impervious to rust and very durable, pulls carbon from within the steel to the surface which provides the black color and wear resistance. Ironically, the current treatment used on the M&P’s almost duplicates he original Glock finish.

This could be the case, I have no idea. Was just thinking that Glock might have adopted a different process/different chemicals to nitrocarburize the stuff they’re making stateside.

I have two Gen4s. The only difference in finish that I have noticed is on the barrel. Post pics.

Stolen from TOS:

Dont think I have ever used the word “finish” and Glock in the same sentence. As long as it doesnt rust through like a 73 Chevy it matters not to me.
I think if anyone has had real corrosion issues with the new finish it may be worth addressing, is that the case?

Which is new, which is old? My gen4 looks like the one on the right.

New is on the left, older finish is on the right.

One of the reasons I bought Glocks other than reliability is the “finish” of the platform, it was like a diamond…it would not rust and would not wear and scratch like my older sigs.

Glock started with giving the barrel a grey dull finish which a lot of people liked cause it would not show wear like the regular older blued barrel

Glock started doing this grey like finish to the slide at the beginning of the Gen 4 roll out starting with the newer Gen 3’s I was told by Glock that the Gen 3 and Gen 4’s will all have this new “improved” finish.

I would bet it is because it is cheaper…

It is showing scratches like none of my other glocks ever did and it is 2 months old.

I actually think that the matte grey finish is slightly cooler.

I also appreciate that it’s a little less shiny than the black.

But whatever, it doesn’t make that much of a difference.

My Gen. 4 19 is showing zero signs of wear or corrosion after months of daily sweaty IWB carry. I don’t see the problem?

I have (2) Gen 4 19s. One has the newer matte finish while the other has the older gloss finish. I can’t tell a difference in the wear, but to be honest, I don’t care about scratches.
