I like LAV but when he claimed that the BCG in an AR would be too hot to hold in your hand unlike the wonderful HKthing, I almost had to draw down on my TV. :rolleyes:
I’d expect the Pistards to perpetuate that BS… but LAV knows better.
All these gun shows are tough… you have to balance presenting info to people who don’t know shit, with not insulting the intellegence of knowledgeable gun nuts like us.
You can’t speak on a high level that would please us, and present a show that appeals to a broader base.
Well, I recorded the show the other night and, after reading some of these reviews, I’m not sure I’ll even watch it.
Obviously, I had hoped the show would be better than it apparently was. To anyone cursing me for plugging a shit show, mea culpa.

LAV is sorta correct.
A DI bolt will get hotter faster than a piston upper bolt. One comes into contact with more hot propellant gases than the other. On the HK rifle it is the piston that get’s toasty.
Yeah… but his demo of one mag… and saying the BCG would be too hot to hold is completely wrong… that’s an old episode anyway… not a big deal.

So, my DI guns must be broken, because after shooting, the BCG’s are hot as shit.
You should watch it and take what you can from it. Like Markm said, we are the elite and technical crap would bore the hell out of most.
I am sure LAV had to spice it up to make the producers happy. Heat really is a non issue. Machine guns get hot and they work too. IMO the cooler running 416 is a good thing but it isn’t a game changer.
I realize that, ahving spent many moons behind a couple of fire belching beasts. But, Im just trying to understand why markm says that DI bcg’s dont get hot, while HK 416’s do? LAV said the opposite, and markm said it was bullshit, soI just cant understand where his experience is coming from. In my realm, a Table 3-4 shoot, a carbine class, ora good range day will present you with a bcg hot enough to melt flesh. Im not saying it hampers performance or that pistons being cooler is better, I just want to know what DI gun he has that doesnt get hot, or if he has ever fired more than 30 rds a day?
I can’t speak for Markm but what I gathered from his comment was not that the DI gun didn’t get hot. I took it as a DI gets hot and a 416 doesn’t, who gives a flying taco?!
Honestly, that the “bolt carrier gets hot” comment is the most damning criticism we can come up with demonstrates how on the mark LAV really is. Even with mostly decent shows like Tales of the Gun I can come up with dozens of examples of misconceptions, opinions presented as facts and even a few outright errors. With certain other shows I could write books as they present more misconceptions than anything else.
I’m not sure I’ve seen anything better than Tactical Impact. Story of the Gun (A&E) was also pretty good. Tales of the Gun (History) was also mostly good, even though there were a few “groans.”
I got a crack out of the USMC Firearms Instructor and his grip with the support hand index finger around the trigger guard. I won’t even go into the other wrong manipulations I saw.
Yet another show that some new shooter will take to heart and replicate because a firearms instructor on Tv did it that way.
As far for the rest of the show, it seemed to get lost on the firearm history as opposed to just the 1911.
At the end of the day, nothing special I guess.

At least it was better than the first.
Thankfully they switched to dramatic reenactments of historical events rather than having some reenactors simply running around trying to prove the validity of random concepts.
