The Military Channel is launching a new six-part series on “the evolution of firearms and how the development of each one changed the face of combat forever.” The series is entitled Triggers: Weapons That Changed the World and it premiers Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Here’s the link to the network programming blurb: http://press.discovery.com/us/mil/programs/triggers/
The first episode is, quite appropriately, going to feature the Colt M1911 pistol.
Looks interesting. Looks like Wil Willis is back. I really enjoyed his other show, Special Ops Mission. It’s actually the only show I’ve ever really wanted to watch on the Military Channel.
I’ll have to check it out. Right now what I’m imagining, though, is another “the AK-47 is the most reliable weapon in the world, able to shoot full of mud and water; the M-16 is less reliable requiring much upkeep and jammed a lot 50 years ago in vietnan” type of show, full of misinformation spouted by “experts” who’s “expertise” comes from playing copious amounts Modern Warfare 3.
I liked the Special Ops Mission show. But it was fucking faked. I can remember seeing his gun cam vs. the fixed cameras on the same movement. And the guns were different… different carry handles and muzzle devices on the same shot.
In other words the scenes were shot more than once.
It’s possible that was just an editing error. I’m sure he made the rounds on the pirate boat several dozen times. They pick shots that look best even if the continuity isn’t right.
That said, it was “reality TV” so it could be fake.
Just wanted to give this thread a bump to remind folks who may be interested that this show premieres tomorrow night (Wednesday, Nov. 30) on The Military Channel.
Could be that during the actual engagements the view from the gun cams got real wobbly and crappy looking so they reinserted smoother footage reshot later to try to reconstruct what actually happened in a more pleasing form for TV.
Anyways, I thought that show was an interesting idea, and I liked the fact that he lost sometimes. Also, unlike the ex SEAL guy that does Future Weapons he doesn’t come off as a giant goof on camera, so a better host for a show about historical weapons.
Now don’t get me wrong, it IS reality TV so I’m sure there are things that are somewhat staged and set up. They kinda know what they want and expect to get in advance.
And WW generally worked near the cameras so the audience would have something interesting to see. But all in all it was more “reality” than most and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Alright, watching it now. Ugh. Plenty of blatantly incorrect information, silly stunt demonstrations.
Still, it’s nice to have gun porn since the the Gunny’s show(s) basically petered out and over a decade since History of the Gun and it’s a huge improvement over those hillbilly soap operas with guns on the Discovery Channel. I suppose I’ll keep watching it.
This show is definitely NOT in the same league as any of Larry Vickers shows. Not even in the same universe.
The show seems to be a blend of various reality TV gun shows shooting competition ala the show “Top Shot” combined with some History Channel style re-enactments in uniforms.
The show featured former Marine Sniper and Marine Firearms Instructor Grant Reynolds who stated on the .45: "I know that when I pull this trigger, no matter where it is pointing, it’s going to stop.
There were other things, but I’ll leave it at that.
On a positive aspect shows like this portray firearms in a positive light and stimulate interest among private citizens–hopefully increasing the number of pro-gun voters.
Now that you mention it, I do remember noticing that on one of the indoor missions. I forget which one though. Definately WTF worthy. I guess I just shrugged it off as a reality TV moment. All the footage from the “Command Center” was cheasy as fuck too. In-mission Footage of WW superimposed on the computer screens. That Marine MSGT needs to retake his Acting MCI too. In the end though, I did enjoy the show. If they came out with another season, I would watch it.
Wil Willis is very well spoken, but he needs a better producer, better technical consultants, and better writers. Clearly, this is a program for the masses who cannot abide TV programming that is not neatly packaged with a simple conclusion.
Completely agree, I was expecting much more and was very disappointed. Tactical Impact did it much better.
Not only was it subpar they did many dangerous things. Juggling guns with live rounds in them and don’t even get me started on the gun race where a winner would end up downrage of another shooter.
And they seemed to jump on the same “issues” from 1981 gun magazines. They really did do .45 vs. 9mm complete with buffoonery like expert “reinactors.” The contention that a horde of charging Germans were more dangerous if armed with Lugers than with Gewehr 98s made my head hurt.
