Looks good, I like it!

Can I inquire as to why you selected a YHM barrel? Also what made you choose the Timney trigger over something like the Geissele?

The Yankee Hill Machine barrel was actually my second choice - the Bravo Company barrel I wanted originally was out of stock and showed no sign of being available anytime soon. Still, it has good reviews and should stabilize anything up to 70 grain (1 in 9 twist). I’ve got some 70 Grain stuff on order from SSA, and hope to test that out shortly. If it lives up to expectations, this one will be going with on on a hug hunt to a buddies place in east Texas after the first of the year…

Picking Timney triggers vs. Gisselle boils down to my personal preference for a crisp single stage trigger. There’s times I think I’m in the minority having that preference, but a guy’s gotta go with his preferences.

Just a little FYI, 1x8 twist barrels will stabilize more than 70gr bullets. Probably all the way ups to 90gr, but 77gr is the longest for mag length ammo.

Onyz Z;

Hey, thanks for the comment - it made me go back and check. I realized I fat fingered the entry (which I’ve since fixed). The barrel is a 1 in 9 twist, and I have heard about guys having good luck with up to 77 grain ammunition in this configuration. Still, I’m not planning to use anything over 70 grain.

Rick

As a side note the barrel twist rate does nothing to stabilize a bullet in relation to the weight of said projectile. The rate of twist in a barrel stabilizes projectiles based on the bullet’s length. Generally a bullet’s weight and length increase in relation to each other and thus the twist rate must be adjusted depending on the size (i.e. length) of the bullet. As such, for traditional bullet construction with a lead core and a copper jacket, many people directly correlate a bullet’s weight and a twist rate which will stabilize a particular projectile. However, the 70 gr TSX bullet being an all copper design changes its dimensions to a point where a 1/9" twist barrel typically will not stabilize them. There are some reports of 1/9 barrels stabilizing the longer bullets quite well, but these reports are an anomaly.

Leonidas;

Okay, thanks - I should know that about the Barnes TSX ammunition, but seem to have misplaced the memory node. What about Hornady’s 75 gr BTHP ammunition? Given its standard construction, do you feel it would stabilize in the 1x9 twist of this barrel?

Generally the longest bullet I recommend for a 1:9" barrel would either be a 69 gr Sierra MK or a 68 gr Hornady BTHP. 75 gr may work, but it’s generally too long to stabilize.
