New CMMG Mk 47 Mutant

Looks like another ar that is ak mag compatible. It also uses a modified ar10 bolt so the bolt weakness issues may be solved. It’s not the KAC SR-47 but it looks better than the others.

Great review from one of our own.

Two of the biggest problems with 7.62x39 in the AR are addressed, the mag and the bolt. I like what I see so far.

What this rifle really is in my view is the first industry answer to the Colt 901 & DPMS G2, as it is an AR10-based receiver set and BCG, just shortened back to what the original 1950’s-1960’s AR10’s were more like. They may have already been working on it before the G2 was revealed, but it will be the first production gun comparable to the 901 and G2, getting back to our short receiver AR10 roots.

I’ll be keeping a close eye out on CMMG, since their Mk.3 is one of the lightest SR25-based .308’s on the market, with a very nicely contoured and engineered receiver set. I would personally like to see a receiver set like this for .308 based cartridges, to displace/replace the Mk.3 offerings. If you go to 9:05 on the video, you’ll see the BCG comparison between the Mk.47 and the AR15.

Yep this was already a functional prototype when the G2 was revealed, I’m not sure the G2 is absolutely the way to go for the bigger rounds.

If they do an Mk74, I’m in. Period. I wouldn’t care if it didn’t run as smoothly, or that it would still be comparably heavy, but something that can run even cheaper 5.45 rounds from a proper AK magazine would have me interested… especially if it’s a drop-on upper.

I like the looks of this quite a bit. How is CMMG as a company? I haven’t really heard much feedback on any of their stuff.

No idea on their recent stuff - circa 2007 they actually made some pretty stout barrels (was one of the few places that had SOCOM profile M4A1 type barrels - mine is a tack driver… and a boat anchor).

From what I’ve read, the upper doesn’t fit a standard lower. I’m intrigued by this too, but I’m not quite sure why.

They have really stepped up their game the last few years. They’re not BCM or Colt quality but they give S&W and Sig a run for their money.

Looks like they addressed the one part that breaks more than any other except for extractors, 7.62x39 and Grendel bolts. How does the Grendel/ 264LBC feed from AK mags?

Is the use of a 4140 barrel considered ok for this rifle? Not trying to start a barrel steel peeing match but I know that they are not as highly looked upon as 4150 when dealing with 5.56mm ARs.

Not as strong as the 4150 for sure but the 7.62x39 operates at a low pressure and the barrel is melonite treated so the wear rate will be much better than stainless. 4140 is more ductile and forgiving than a stainless barrel. I talked to the VP of the company that makes our barrels. He said they can weld the muzzle closed on a 4140 or 4150 and fire it without the barrel exploding. He said the 416 and 410 stainless barrels will burst every time.

I will ditch my 556R for this in a heart beat.

Think I want one but will have to wait for a bit.

I don’t wanna like it but I do. MK 74 would be my choice above this one though.

Ok, I have watched Plouffe’s and Hickok’s reviews and have a couple questions.

First, is there a steel insert for the mag lug or is aluminum retaining the mags?

Second, Would this receiver stand up to push-ups or being dropped directly on the mag?

Lastly, is there a BHO mag that will hold the bolt back on last shot?

Gun looks like a pretty good idea, just curious about these few things and what they will actually sell for/around.

I read there is a replaceable steel pin in the lower.
My question is if the steel mag is being held in by a steel pin, that’s great, BUT, if the steel pin is held by an aluminum receiver, wouldn’t that wear the holes that the pin sits in??

If so, once the pin hole wears wouldn’t the mag start to wobble around, and cause feeding issues?

Probably not enough to matter. Your AR15 has steel hammer and trigger pins touching the aluminum lower. And they are able to rotate (potentially). If the MK47 design has the steel pin blocked from rotation, there should be no significant wear between that pin and the receiver.
