New Bulgarian magazines for the M16...wait, what?

I’m very interested in the spring design.

Any word on materials?

The following doesn’t pertain to these specific magazines, but new magazines in general. Its also not directed at the OP:

I have about 30 PMAGs and 30 USGI mags. Both types have been 100% reliable, are battle proven, and do everything they’re supposed to do.

I can’t imagine many people having less mags than I do (among those who have been shooting for years). I’ve actually sold about 30 additional PMAGs on this site because I didn’t have room.

My question is why are people always seeking out new magazine brands? Getting back to these Bulgarian magazines, sure they may work but for their price what do they offer that USGI mags don’t? Why the fascination with Lancer magazines and thermolds and Bulgarian?

I’m not hating, just generally curious. Unless something truely innovative comes along (crushproof, 1 oz weight, etc) I can’t see myself buying any magazines for a long time.

Thanks for posting that Jack.

To be honest I don’t know…but one factor that I think spurred their development is that most Eastern European HSLD types have dropped the AK and are using some variant of the M4/HK416. These would be regionally produced…additionally, European civilians wouldn’t have to dick around with ITAR restrictions.

As to their marketability here? I have some questions as well.

I think 40’s would definitely fill a niche that’s out there.

Yes! I had to briefly un-ignore you to answer this question! :stuck_out_tongue:

I can see the 40’s selling well, but if they can’t get the price of the 30’s under $10 then I really don’t see any reason to try them.

I too can see the 40’s selling well if they are reliable and not significantly bigger than a 30 rounder (pretty much regardless of price)

I’m just glad they aren’t making them solely for the US Market…for their sake.

30rd PMAGS are good enough for me for now, but thanks for the info. Now that Surefire has their 60rd magazines on the market though…

All Magpul has to do is see the price point, offer a 40 rounder for less $$$ and this whole thing will be over before it started. Or MP could just drop the price on the 30 rounders and again it will be a non issue. Just MHO.

This is how a mag should be built. I wonder how much polymer you can get around the metal in the over-mold but without a doubt this is a very good looking product.

The over-molded pistol mags I always thought were the real deal, you then get the advantage of the polymer, so its body responds elastically, and without the problems of polymer in the thin areas at the lips, no splitting of the spine, lip tears. I guess the new lancer mags are pretty close to this now they stretched their metal down to the top of the catch.

I’m still on the fence about the price and the practicality of owning the SF mags, as a civilian. If these 40s prove to be close to the durability of a Pmag, I’ll get a few.

Agreed.

I thought Magpul had something similar in development a few years ago?

I don’t own any and don’t plan to own any, I’ll just “get by” with what I’ve got. If they were cheaper then I’d get a few I guess but for $10-12 per PMAG, there’s no beating that.

I just don’t want to support SureFire. I’d like to get one though…

lol @ markm

yeah, for $125 i think I’ll skip those surefire mags.

frankly I have so many AR and AK mags at this point that buying new stuff really gets to be a matter of testing. if the new stuff proves out then I might buy more. frankly tho I just two months ago finally got around to adopting pmags as primary mags stepping up from HK and GI mags, so making a move to the bulgarian mags as primary would be a pretty drawn out process for me. the metal lining is a big draw tho and should solve the problems inherent with the pmags

I had to chuckle at the 40 rounder comments… while at the gunshow buying these another customer came up and looked at them then dismissed them out of hand saying “yeah I dont like to shoot those 30’s, they are too long and you cant get a good prone with them” I can only imagine what he would have said if they were 40’s!!

personally I’m a big fan of the mag monopod

Oh, and I have no idea what kind of mag spring steel they used, nor any idea how I would tell.

Agreed. I have over 100 Pmags and about the same in USGI Aluminum type mags with Magpul followers, but having an extra 10 rounds in a reliable, similar size mag appeals to me. SF Mags are too bulky for my taste, but I can see the merits under certain applications.

I saw one being ran next to me at Pat Rogers COC in Dec and got to play with it. It was very impressive. Very well made and reliable. Not too weighty fully loaded. I would have loved to have seen the dude with the belt fed Shrike use it, but don’t know if it would have been compatible. I may get few for a couple of BOBs, and just for shits and giggles.

You are correct. There is demand for such magazines here. HSLD usually can get US made equipment, but they do not like being on US DoS mercy. German made rip-off copies of P-Mag (called G-Mag) are worth nothing, HK HRM mags are expensive and heavy (that is why everybody here is waiting for polymer mag from HK).

Talked to the Importer today in person. He says that he has about 500 or so in stock, and that they are priced at $15.99 retail.

As to 40’s he say that it takes about 2.5 months for all the governments to get out of the way and about 2-3 days to get the good shipped over.

That means that we are about 2 months out on the 40 rounders, but they are in the works now. I actually held one in my hands this afternoon and they looks to be the same as the 30’s but longer.

If you are interested in picking up a couple for yourself, it would be best to Email him as he stays busy in the shop most of the day and does not answer the phone till later in the day. they will not be added to the website as an e-commerce option due to the expense of setting that stuff up (which I can personally attest to is a PITA)

Why?..

$15.99 is way too high IMHO. There are already proven mags out there for less.

Is definitely a steep price. Maybe it’s partly because of the hoops they must jump to get it here?

In any case I might pick up a few just for kicks but no more.

agreed, magpuls are already proven to outlast any other mags so in order to do well they would need to be priced lower than magpuls
