Hi all, I’ve been lurking here for quite awhile, and appreciate the vast info available. I currently have a BCM lightweight carbine that I have really enjoyed. I want to build an AR from the ground up, and have a couple of questions.
First-I’m looking for an upper with a shell deflector, but no forward assist. I have never used the FA and, being a lefty, it tends to get in the way when I’m trying to use the charging handle. I have been looking at the Voltor MUR with no FA. Are there any other options I should consider? Also, are there lowers that the MUR will not fit on?
Second-I have not bought anything yet, but I have the gun parted out in my mind. Does anyone see anything that seems unwise, or any suggestions to improve the build?
UPPER:
Voltor MUR upper
Raptor Charging Handle
Rainier NiB BCG
Noveske 8.2” 300 BLK barrel
AAC flash suppressor
Troy VTAC 7” forend
I’m thinking the biggest potential for screw-ups for me would be installing the gas block, which the Noveske already has installed.
LOWER:
Seekins Precision Ambi lower
ALG trigger
MOE+ grip
Phase 5 pistol buffer (until I can SBR it)
B.A.D. A.S.S. safety (I have one on my BCM and really like it)
I considered just buying the 9” AAC 300 upper as a whole unit, is that a better option than building my own? Thanks all for the help.
Sounds like a nice build. You might want to consider buying a complete Noveske upper since you plan on using their barrel and a MUR receiver, you may come out a little cheaper.
Sounds like a solid build. I second the motion on the barrel. There are barrels that will provide very good accuracy for less $$ than Noveske (and I’m a big Noveske fan).
Just a little FYI: unless you really want a NiB BCG, you could save a little cash and go with the standard phosphate BCG instead. NiB doesn’t provide much other beyond looks and easier cleaning.
Thanks all for the input. I have looked at the Rainier barrels, and would seriously consider them. I’ll check out the ICE barrels as well. Will is be too big of a deal to get the gas block on correctly? That was one big plus of the Noveske barrel for me. I was going to go with the BCM BCG, but the Rainier NiB was the exact same price. I figured it was a quality piece, and I could give it a try to see how I like it. That was one of the benefits of building-I didn’t really like the rail on the AAC myself-a buddy had the VTAC rail and I really liked the feel.
