New build need advice on buffer

Ok so I just ordered my WOA 18" 1/8 twist SPR rifle lenght barrell and Geissele SSA trigger. This is going on a JD Machine upper/lower. My question is which buffer system would be best to start with? I like the JP silent buffer concept but not sure about running a lighter bolt. I havent purchased a BCG yet because of this. If I can run a standard BCG I would like to get my hands on a JP or CMT, they seem to get the best reviews etc. Thanks!

The current RE/Buffer/Spring kool aid seems to be the VLTOR A5 system.

Standard 7 position A5RE if you’re going to use the EMod stock

Use the A5 SR (short rail meant for use with standard carbine stocks)

the A5 H-2 (standard buffer that comes with the kit)

Sprinco Green rifle spring.

I’ve tried the JP silent capture buffer/spring replacement in my A5 tube and it works rather well. If I were to substitute an adjustable gas block onto my 18" it would be even better.

Does the JP silent capture require an adjustable gas block? Or the block is needed if you don’t use there light weight bolt?

I’d either go…

Standard Rifle Stock and Buffer…

or the A5 if you want an adjustable stock…

or if you have to use a Carbine RE, the H2…

USGI stainless spring of the appropriate system for each. Forget the JP silent nonsense. A silent buffer system is putting stupid before function.

I like this answer, although I’m not an A5 fan.
Doesn’t that use a bastard size buffer ?

OP, don’t over-think this.
It’s a simple part of the rifle.

Yep, the A5 RE in both regular and RE-10 config are longer than a standard carbine RE.

Yes, it uses a different size buffer that just happens to work better than any other buffer.

Buffers rarely break, so replacement of non-standards parts is not really an issue in this case.

I’m no expert, but I would say it all really boils down to what kind of ammo you’re going to be shooting. If you want to shoot mostly cheap .223, then go carbine buffer and semi/low mass BCG. If you only want to shoot full power 5.56 loads, get a FA BCG and run a H/H2 buffer. A quality BCG and H buffer should be able to handle anything. Or go the rifle buffer route. Since you’ve got a 1/8 twist, you can shoot just about anything under the sun so the choice is yours.

OK, all points taken. I think I need to school myself on the all the varieties of springs/buffers and there intended applications. Is there a website, thread or video that explains all this in detail. This is my first AR build. I have a safe full of guns but never had a use for an AR. I thought now was the time to get one if ever. So I researched quality uppers and lowers and ended up with two of each JD Machine. Now I am “two feet in” and whenever I take on a project I like to do things right the first time with quality parts. I am a do it myself kind of person who has the ability and tools to build or fix about anything. I haven’t worked on the AR platform sense my days as a SP in the Air Force and have sense retired after 22 yrs. So I am familure with the AR in it’s stock “issued” configuration. But when we start mixing parts around I need a little schooling.

Let’s break it down…

  1. Choose the buttstock that you like.

  2. If you choose good ol’ A2, we’re done.
    A2 runs a rifle buffer.
    Bolt it on, go shoot.

  3. If you choose one of the many carbine (collapsible) types there are several buffer weights to choose from.
When you’re as brain-damaged as I am, you own them all.
Almost everything will run with a carbine (standard) buffer.
A rifle gassed 18 might run an H or H2 with full power ammo.

I like to run good, full power ammo (Lake City) and will feed the rifle the heaviest buffer that it will handle, when dealing with the carbine class buttstock systems.

Done, next.
