I bought a BCM BCG as a spare for my S&W MP15 with about 500 rounds through it. Now - some opinions. Replace the S&W BCG with the BCM or keep it as a spare? Anything to be gained either way? Build around the BCM and forget the spare?
The S&W only has 500 through it? If they are both basically new, put whichever you think is best in your gun and and keep the other as a back up. Why did you buy the spare BCG for such a new rifle?
If it were mine I would run some rounds through the BCM for function testing, clean it, and put it up till I needed it.

That’s what I did with a spare bolt I bought for my AR. Got a good one from BCM. Function checked it on my colt 6940 with a range trip, and then it got cleaned and put in my MOE grip. Always nice to have spare parts around!
Run the BCM carrier at the least. The lighter ( semi auto ) carrier standard to M&Ps can be kept as a back up. The bolts are both MP tested and are interchangable, you can install the one already shot into the BCM carrier and save the new bolt for several thousand rounds down the line. The heavier BCM ( auto ) carrier will help increase the lock time and will slow the cyclic rate of fire a bit. The benefit is this setup is a bit easier on the moving parts. This set up would be optimized by adding an H marked buffer ( the M&Ps have a carbine buffer) to the mix.

Replace the Smith rifle with a BCM rifle and you won’t need a spare…
I keep a few spare parts in the grip insert Magpul makes.
Just makin sure it sounded like you were meaning a whole BCG.
Split66 - all BCM carriers are auto carriers then? I installed an H2 buffer already.
I don’t keep spare BCGs. Just spare cam pins, firing pins, etc.
If you change the bolt, the lifetime warranty will be voided on your new S&W rifle.
Spare parts are a must have, but since you purchased a complete rifle with a lifetime warranty, I’m not sure I would change parts just to change parts. If it breaks, why waste your own money on replacement parts, that’s what S&W is for.
Not sure if you care, but just thought I’d point it out since nobody else has.
If you feel that the S&W parts are inferior to BCM, no arguments here, then keep the S&W (as is) as a back up and purchase a complete BCM.
I’d spend all my extra money on ammo, not replacement parts for a 500 round rifle with lifetime warranty.

Just recently purchased two BCG from BCM. It appears that BCM sourced the carriers from two different vendors. Bolts, cams, firing pins, etc appear similar. The first carrier was more of a olive drab in color with “342 X 6” marked on the side. The second carrier was typical black in color with no side marking. Interesting…

Yep, it’s normal. Manufacturers often get the same part from multiple sources. It’s the QC that matters, and BCM obviously does a good job with that.
342X6 is the CAGE Code Paul at BCM use to use in his sig line…so I’d assume thats is BCM’s CAGE Code???
