From Bud’s I had ordered a new 590a1 and picked it up yesterday. At the range, there were repeated failures to feed. Shell stop and interrupter were out of spec resulting in the live round not leaving tube and also providing enough resistance to prevent fore end moving back when pumped.
I had this exact issue with another 590a1. New parts from MBERG fixed it. Putting the other 590a1’s parts into the new one remedied its problems.
The tech was courteous and helpful, told me that they had a big backlog, and said that I’d get the two parts in 2-3 weeks… I noticed that Brownell’s and Midway were both out of stock on these items.???. Other forums have pointed out that a batch of defective stops and interrupters is causing feeding problems in many recent production guns. The person who put this shotgun together obviously never shot it or ran dummy shells through it.
My two defective out of the box 590a1’s were fairly close in their serial number range: U417,xxx through U699,xxx. Most likely all in the 590 family are numbered within the same range, or perhaps the Tx plant has a different letter prefix from the northern plant.
I had one that had a ringed rough barrel and refused to extract high brass. Mossberg replaced the barrel and bolt for free but their logistics people lost the shotgun for 3 months. They eventually found it on a loading dock.
go ahead and order a new high power magazine tube spring while you’re at it. Mine was the weak link on my a1 and it is easy and cheap to replace, but ruins the day when you don’t have it.
About my 590a1,…,Thursday I ordered the stop and interrupter from Havlin Sales and received the parts today by mail. Perfect fix and repair. Havlin specializes in Mossbergs and is a great source for parts, stocks, barrels–obsolete and other for this brand. The owner, a nice guy, answered the phone and was highly knowledgeable and helpful. See his website for sensible prices for product and shipment.
Sucks to hear that a mossberg had an issues right out of the box… I’ve been lucky… and only replaced the ejector on my old 500atp6… never had one hiccup out of it…
As for my 590… I haven’t shot it yet… still unfired… now I’m worried…
I have the same problem with my 590A1, I got the new shell stop and interrupter from Mossberg and it did not fix the problem. I think I need a new set of action bars as well because the original shell stop being out of spec caused a bur on the action bar where the two parts mate up. Time to call Mossberg again.
The new parts may also be defective. Can you “borrow” a set from a working 500/590 to check out this possibility? I’m sure that you’re cleaned the weapon, but I suggest that you do so again and look for crud or anything else not belonging there. From afar my guess is that the action bars are ok. Keep us informed. Also, see the Havlin sales link by me in this thread. The owner is a Mossberg guru and is a nice guy. Call him and ask his opinion.
