Never thought I would see this

How discouraging for the officers that work there…its a shame

(Wellford, SC)—The Mayor of Wellford is defending her policy which bans police officers in that city from chasing suspects. Sallie Peake says the policy also includes vehicle chases along with pursuits on foot.

A memo issued on September 2nd from Peake to all Wellford officers reads:

“As of this date, there are to be no more foot chases when a suspect runs. I do not want anyone chasing after any suspects whatsoever.“

WSPA first reported the mandate on Wednesday after an anonymous citizen faxed a copy of the memo to our newsroom. Peake was out of town and unavailable for comment. On Friday, reporter Chris Cato caught up with her in her office and questioned her about the origin of the policy. Peake says she issued the mandate because several officers have been injured during chases, driving up insurance costs for the town.

“The officers are costing us more money on insurance than most citizens here in the city of Wellford are even earning,“ says Peake.

She says the city is paying out $20,000 annually in workers’ compensation claims, much of it due to the police force. In July, two officers wrecked their cruisers while chasing suspects and had to go to the hospital for minor treatment. The police chief says three officers have been injured during foot chases in the last two years.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright says the policy prevents police from upholding the law—a direct violation of their constitutional oath.

“If a bank robber or a drunk driver or a shoplifter or somebody with a warrant runs on foot, it’s our obligation to do what we can do to bring them to justice,“ says Wright.

But when we asked Peake about her order impeding an officer from stopping a crime in progress, she became defensive and irate. The conversation went as follows:

Reporter: “Are you telling your officers if they witness a crime - they witness someone commit a crime on someone else and they’re ten yards away - they can’t go stop that person?“
Peake: “Is that in there?“ (referring to policy)
Reporter: “It says no chases whatsoever.“
Peake: “Well, that’s what I said, no chases, didn’t I? I didn’t say nothing about a crime. If you see a crime, this that and the other -“
Reporter: “Well, that’s what a chase is - “
Peake: “Well, I told them no chase on foot, and (the police chief) know exactly what I mean, so you’re trying to twist what I -“
Reporter: “No, I’m not. You said no chases. No chases means no chases.“
Peake: (claps hands) “You got you a story, thank God! You are so sweet! You got you a story on a woman in Wellford! Hallelujah! I’m so proud of you, Mr. Cato!“

Wellford Police Chief Chris Guy has told his officers to abide by the policy. He says they can still protect the public.

“Just because a suspect may run does not mean we can’t identify them, sign warrants, and catch them later,“ says Guy.

But Sheriff Wright says when a suspect gets away, there is always the chance he could hurt someone before officers catch up with him.

Peake says that won’t happen in Wellford.

Here’s hoping the arm of the law really is long.

Looks like the Mayor and Police chief of Wellford really live in Fantasy Land.

Maybe, crooks will have a change of heart and just turn themselves in, due to the overwhelming guilt their collective conscience has piled upon their spirit?

Or, maybe not.

How do these assclowns keep their jobs?

If you watch the video interview you can definitely see the mayor has some issues

We had a guy here run a couple weeks ago because he was afraid he was going to get tased. The local P.D. loves to use their tasers. He turned himself in a few hours later.

Let’s see…Mayor not allowing police to chase crooks…hmmmm
looks like Her Honor is extending professional courtesy to them.

are you fuckin kidding me?

astonishing… do they have mayoral term limits and she’s on her last term? she must be off her damn meds…

If I wanted to commit crimes in South Carolina guess what city I would head to?

I think thats like saying that Charlie Manson has some slight anger management issues. This Mayor is a nut job and the chief is just rolling over. Me thinks there is something more going on here.

even the local criminals must be appalled…

its obviously a smaller department… they should all strike. walk off the job and say, “let us know when sanity is restored… we’ll be happy to protect you again.”

do they have Recall in SC?

A very effective way to completely neuter the police department and endanger the citizens.

I would quit before the civil suits start rolling in.

Seems like the criminals just found out that Wellford is free game.

Thank God for living in Texas.

sadly this reminds me of HS when you pull away on your buddy then stop and say OK get back in and jerk forward a few feet then stop and repeat !!!

man criminals are going to have fun in this town now

Won’t be long until we’re just like firefighters. 100% reactive… though I wouldn’t mind the leather recliners and sleeping on duty. The mayor is totally disconnected with the police department, very sad. The policy won’t last long, there’s no way that mayor will be reelected. She has effectively made her city a crime free… no… free crime zone.

Oh wow.

This is fail on an epic scale.

Wow…what a fricken nut job.

This is nuts. What is the purpose for having any police force. If my department came up with a policy like that, I may not want to be working there.

The more policies and laws put in to place to tie the hands of the cops will only make citizens less safe.

Stop or my mom will shoot!

It sounds like this sarcasm was just itching to get out. She obviously wanted to prove how important she is by putting the reporter in his place, and to do so as soon as possible during the interview. She is abusing public office to go on a power trip. That lady (and I use the term loosely) should be removed from her post to avoid further endangering the public. One of the primary functions of government is to maintain safety and public order.

From the preamble to the US Constitution:

  1. To form a more perfect Union,
     2. establish Justice,
  2. insure domestic Tranquility,
  3. provide for the common defense,
  4. promote the general Welfare,
  5. and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.

The meanings to all these are…

  1. Governance is across the different state boundaries with the intent of keeping the union together
     2. Establish legislation and rule of law
  2. Establish enforcement of the law - police
  3. Establish a means for national defense - standing army or militia
  4. Govern for the common good
  5. Govern not just for (and in) the hear and now - but with an eye to serving future generations

The whole preamble to the constitution is:

“WE the people in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic Tranquility, Provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare and, secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our prosperity, to ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America.”

ETA: I just watched the video of the interview. I am hesitant to say it, but watching the interview play out makes me think she is treating him this way because of (his) race. She can’t abide having a young white reporter question her on her asinine policy. Not that race has anything to do with said asinine policy. That’s just pure moron.

AH as California goes, so goes the nation. this mentality is our #1 export
