Need some sling advice

Object is a 16" middy with a CTR stock and MOE handguards.

I have a viking tactics standard sling. Currently using the vertical slot in the CTR and a H&K clip on the forward stock FSB sling position. This is less than optimal obviously.

My first question/observation is I’m having a hard time adjusting it to fit me. I’m 6’ tall and 150lbs with an average skinny but not sickly size chest/shoulders, it seems this sling is built with someone either significantly larger or wearing a heck of a lot of gear in mind. I might just be up the creek on this I realize. To reach a point where I can snug it up to my chest enough to not flop around too much I end up with the adjusting latch quite far around on the left of my back. If I take out slack on the forward attachment I end up with very little adjustment room. I can work with it but am I missing something or is this just the way of things?

Next up is mounting. I’m interested in an end of receiver mounting with some sort of extension tube plate, and using either a MASH clip or another H&K clip. Such as this http://www.crosstac.com/store?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=69&category_id=39 or this http://www.skdtac.com/Vltor_Single_Attachment_Sling_Endplate_p/vlt.110.htm. Though the Vltor one I believe would be safer to use with a MASH clip, I’ve seen examples of the H&K clip un-clipping on it’s own if the opening is too large and things bind just right. My complaint with the vertical slot on the CTR that I’m using now is transitions to the support side are next to impossible without choking as tight as I have to run the sling, even fully extended. I’m hoping the central rear of receiver attachment point helps with that. Thoughts?

On the front side, there is this http://store.impactweaponscomponents.com/mosnho.html which again looks like a job for a MASH clip, but it’s light and simple and I can position it wherever feels good on the MOE handguard, I suspect high and near the receiver. The other thought has been this http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=118&parents=153,174 mounted to a piece of pic rail on the MOE, but it seems like two parts where one would suffice (the mount-n-slot).

Thoughts and/or experience?

I’ve gone to QD sockets. I attach the swivels to my various slings, just pop them on. I use a Gear Sector rail-mounted swivel mount on the front and a Noveske QD end-plate on the the other end. That works great for me and I’ve stopped looking for alternate sling mounting schemes.

There certainly are a lot more options for QD swivels. I really like the H&K and Mash clips though.

There is no reason your sling should not give you excellent performance if you use the right techniques.

First, the sling is designed to be long enough for soldiers in full body armor and is extra long. You must accept the “tail” that is the result of this excellent system and possibly cut the webbing only from the front end of the sling to fit your body when normally used. Do not cut the end that dangles; cut only the end that connects to the front mount. Be sure it is the right length for you by testing extensively and then cut and heat seal.

Secondly, I have found that it is much better to secure the rear to the outside of the rear of the stock, rather than the inside or to a one point mount. It will hang better and, more importantly, not choke you when you loosen the front strap to transition to the weak side. This way you have the best of both worlds in that it is more stable when hanging free than when you use a one point mount for the rear, and a quick loosening allows moving the weapon to the other shoulder without moving your arm out of the sling.

Same here. I’ve got a QD built into my buttstock plus two DD sockets up front, one underneath towards the front and a second at 9 o’clock at the very rear of the forearm. Switching between them is so simple.

Yeh, lots of flexibility…built into stock, receiver endplate and anywhere along the rail bottom or side. If I want to use my MS-1 sling for single-point, all I need to do is pop an empty swivel onto the endplate…instant ASAP.

Lot of love for the QD. I’ve used them on standard carry slings on old milsurp stuff and hunting rifles.

It looks to me like I have to run the sling so loose that I can’t cinch it up tight to me for movement, to be able to transition. This is with the rear through the vertical slit on the CTR stock.
