Hey fellas and gals,
I need some feedback here. I’ve found that I might have a unique skill in customizing FDE polymers. I’m thinking about offering my skills for sale to the right people. I’ve found that I can do as much as an iconic symbol to the coolest looking fonts for a personal touch. I’ll attach some photo’s of my personal rifle which I’ve already tested on.
My question for you guys is what do you think? And what would you think is a fair deal to offer for this type of custom detail?
I’ve learned this from the dying forum with rit dye and a lot of trial and error. I really think not everyone can do this. That’s why I am asking as a hobbiest to you guys for an honest opinion.
Looks nice, but before trying to sell, even if your not going to sell as a business, you might want to check into putting company logos on items that other company’s have the rights to. I’m no lawyer but that may not go over so well with them.
That is true Aanayab1. But I can do trademark designs if its a request from someone with their personal item. Think of it as someone would do, say a tattoo. You see trade mark tat’s all the time on people. Why? b/c it’s their body, I really doubt they call the company they want the tattoo of for permission.
If I do decide to do this Im thinking more Patriot designs, like flags and stars etc.
Looks pretty good, I would do as 500grains said and get a “portfolio” of sorts together and go to some gun shows and see the interest level. I bet there are a lot fo guys interested in work like that.
Another route to go would be to seek out a company like G&R or the likes and see if they would be interested in offering your services to their customers as a customization option. Not sure, but it’s an idea?
How intracate can you make them? If I were to provide a photo could you replicate with good accuracy? How about if it were a portrait? Multi-color/layers?
Do you hand paint only or can you screen print as well? Hand painted always look sbetter IMO, but screen printing may be a good option for the more intracate stuff.
I make my own beer/wine/champagne/cider/meade/braggot and use to hand paint my bottles, but now I just screen print them directly on, and it is much easier for me, and looks better overall I think, although not as artsy or original (I can paint/draw well, but I’m not a pro thats for sure).
I believe I could do intricate details, within reason. lol.
I haven’t tried putting different colors yet. But I will be
Like I said this is just the beginning. As of know just blacks are my specialty.I could do any color substituting black. Like reds, greens, browns colors like that.
Also, this is not paint. What this is, is like think of how tattoos work. Basically I’m injecting the color I want into the polymer. In doing so this way it doesn’t change any of the dimensions of the product and it wont wear off. Very cool.
I dont really want to go into much detail b/c I’ve been doing alot of testing and dont want to give out secrets I’ve learned from error. I’m sure you guys understand.
Thanks for the imput.
keep em coming.
Can you post some of your latest work on the DIY different color polymers thread. I know that’s where you learned this as I did and mtguns as well. It’s not bad to sell, but I think you owe to everyone who helped and invested to help us all progress. I would like to see your new work. My stuff is on there also. Thanks.
Wow. This was a while ago. Things have defiently advanced since this post. I’m not much of a forum guy. I tried using forums to help with opinions and advice when I was first started pondering the idea for my buisness offering this kind of custom work. But I must say forums really let me down. I left using them and just started the buisness and said if it’s good enough then word of mouth will get me my customers and I haven’t looked back yet. Til today when I got this notification.
Now really all I’m going to say is you and everyone else out there who wants to get into this or give it a try has all the knowledge and tools I had. I talked with MtGuns when I first started and he never told me all his secrets. All I found out is he uses vinyl and a razer. I just kept experimenting and wasting money. My wife was really getting pissed at me. But I was obbsessed to find a way. And I did.
Im not going to advertise on here. Hopfully you respect my reply and good luck. Shit. Half the fun was trying to make it work
