Need help with upper receiver choice

Hey folks, a couple of questions if you please. I tried to search, but it brought up a blank page, so there might be too many links…

I am looking for a flat top upper receiver for my ranch/truck/gun to beat up, a 16" Bushmaster. Something solid that works well, that will be of good quality, but not out of this world expensive.

I have a friend with a nice pre ban 20" Colt Hbar sporter, and he also is thinking of getting a flat top upper for that rifle, and want high quality. What brands would you recommend?

Both rifles have carry handle uppers, and I would just like my smith to switch them out with these flat tops…

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

BCM (Bravo Company USA) makes some of the best stuff you can get. They try to follow the TDP and I’ve yet to hear anyone who is displeased with the quality of their products.

They would be my default answer for anyone seeking a good upper assembly.

Thank you sir…

One question I forgot to ask, one receiver will be for the truck gun, and one for my buddies 20" which is a very accurate gun. He would like to maintain that, or enhance that accuracy.

I guess my question is, would I want one receiver, and he maybe another type or brand because of the inherent “qualities” of our guns?

If he wants a super-accurate target gun, those do exist…but they are usually expensive and in short supply. Some manufacturers (who I will not name) have an accuracy guarantee on their uppers…but they only guarantee it with ammo that most ordinary civilians can’t get.

So beware accuracy claims by companies and by individuals.

Frankly a good milspec upper is going to be vastly more accurate than 90+% of the people who will ever pull the trigger on the weapon. I don’t know what kind of groups your buddy gets with his HBAR and I can’t predict the groups that a particular BCM build will give…

But speaking in the broadest possible terms it’s not likely that he’ll see a noticeable decrease in accuracy by switching out his upper with a BCM. BCM comes the closest to the quality of a Colt build of anyone on the market.

ok, one dumb question before I buy a Bravo Co upper assembly.

For the 16" Bushy and my buddies 20" colt, upper with M4 feed ramps or not?

I would imagine not on these stock guns, but I’m not sure…

Are you referring to the configuration of your current receivers? The Bushmaster likely does not have M4 feed ramps. I don’t know about the Colt. The easiest way to find out is to snap some pics and post them.

If you’re referring to the BCM builds, they do use M4 feed ramps.

Ok, my buddy just sent me pics of his feed ramps, and they do not cut into the receiver so they are not M4 feed ramps. His question is this:

Would it be advantageous for him to get the upper with the M4 ramp cuts, and have his smith adjust/modify his 20" barrel so they blend together? Is this more hassle, a bad idea? Does it really matter?

Thanks again.

nevermind

Para,

I saw your first post, and then your changed post, any reason why not?

Wilco,

You would be best served by getting a BCM M4 flat top upper with the feedramps. Your friend with the 20" rifle barrel does not need them.

i missed the part where you said you were swapping out the uppers somehow, so what i said didn’t really apply. my reading comprehension goes to crap sometimes.

either way, you don’t need the ramps on the 20"

Ok…

Iraqgunz, why would I want the M4 feed ramps. If my Bushy barrel does not have them, can’t that cause a problem?

I apologize for all of the questions, I really am not trying to be dense about this…

Wilco,

What type of cuts does the barrel extension have? I am pretty sure that you will have no problems using an M4 upper with that barrel. There is a plenty of prior discussion here about the feedramps and their purpose.

While we are on this subject, I have this old barrel, I can’t tell if I would use this with a M4 ramp upper or not, it’s just tough for me to tell. Can you tell me why or why not, for my own learning enjoyment?
