I purchased a MI Tactical 2 piece forearm, at first I was very pleased with its quality fit and finish, but now I’m not due to it moves to much, I want to goto a free float but I’m torn between 2 different tactical forearms I’m looking at either Larue or Daniel Defense Omega, what I was wanting to know from anyones opinion that have had these or are using them as we speak, which one would be a better route to go with? I like the fact that DD has the uninterrupted rail mount but is it nessasary to have that? Also with DD being installed without tearing down the barrel does Larues Rail system have to be installed with the barrel being removed? I just kinda lost on which one to go with, I know they are both top notch Rail Systems, to be honest I’m more leaning towards the Larue, I want the one that would have the best hold with no movement whatsoever and the pict. rail being in spec with the tightest tolerances. Everyones opinion is welcomed, I could definately use the help.
They are both very high quality items. It would be an rare exception to have an issue with either one. If you’re concerned in the least about having to remove FSB and barrel nut to install, get the Omega. The Larue rail does require disassembly.
I have a Larue rail due to my setup (longer rail), but if I was buying a handguard for a standard carbine, it’d be hard to justify getting something other than the Omega, personally.
The CASV-EL is two piece and attaches to the top rail, you don’t have to diassemble to install. You will have to remove the front sling swivel, if you’ve got one. It’d be a good choice for that application.
Be aware that because of the top rail height, if you’re currrently running running an Aimpoint you’ll need a different height mount to maintain proper co-witness.
I was in the same predicament as you. I decided on the LaRue on the fact that I like the idea of a single piece free float (stronger) better than a two piece. Also if you do not have a welded on muzzle then why not remove some stuff in install a rail. Its only part of the fun decking out your AR. There is a more monolithic look on the Omega if you like that. Also the Omega leaves the Handguard cap (IMO doesn’t look right with a FF). If you removed the handguard cap then you have a gap between the rail and the FSB. Now the LaRue compared to other DD rails is that the LaRue has the QD sling swivels built in (Omega has this). Only downside i see on the LaRue is the little extra weight. The weight difference when in perspective is the difference of just a couple bullets so… I’ll tell you what other people told me. If your stuck on the LaRue vs. DD Omega go with the LaRue. If you are unable to remove your FSB go with the DD Omega.
everything other AR i own is just regular flat top. so it will be throwing a little bit of a wrench into the works as far as mount compatibility, but I might work it into a build just to have something a little different from my other carbines i guess.
damn spare parts turning themselves into a whole new rifle
