what did the gunsmith do to your weapon? are you talking about the front sight BASE? or the post itself? (base is the triangular frame that houses the post)
sounds like he might have mushed your index slot a bit…
i got a Daniel defense omega x rail installed.
the post is leaning to the left but from what i see the base is a little to the side too meaning if its possible, i dont think the post is bent or anything. bkboooo any idea how that happened?
I will leave it to the experts for a final diagnosis, but it may have come like that from the factory and you simply didn’t notice it without the rail to give you a reference point. I say that because I noticed something similar on my 6920 when i installed a regular omega rail. The front sight assembly was canted very slightly to the left from the factory and I didn’t really see it until the rail was installed. Since it took only three clicks of windage on my BUIS to start hitting dead-on I didn’t worry about it.
Is the dd rail lined up with the upper receiver rail? I’m not familiar with the mounting of this particular rail but is it possible that the rail is off and causing optical confusion?
its definitely possible it came like that from the factory… sometimes we don’t notice shit till we get to really looking at it.
it’s also entirely possible the smith did it. the barrel assembly is indexed via an index pin on the barrel extension and an indexing slot on the receiver. sometimes the barrel nut wants to bind against the barrel extension during torquing, and it mashes the indexing slot to the non-ported side of the weapon. since this FSB is canted in that direction, it seems perfectly possible to me.
this isn’t the end of the world, it can be fixed relatively easy… but it will require removal of the handguard and barrel nut. he’ll need to slim the slot, grease the front of the barrel extension, and try again. my preferred method is to vise the receiver in a block AND vise the barrel into barrel blocks at the same time, keeping everything immobile during torque. most guys don’t have their shops set up in such a way as to accomplish this, however.
got back today with good news. the gunsmith said he failed to push the pin/pins(index pins?) all the way in, thats was why the front post and base was off to the left. now it is straight and ready to go.
