Hey guys I’m flying to Tennessee on 4/6 to visit my brother and I want to bring my 686 plus, Ruger22/45, and I’m trying to find a good case to bring 2-4 handguns if possible. I want something sturdy and safe that I can lock but also nothing that’s too expensive. I always hear pelican thrown out there, what so you guys think?
I would consider the Pelican series as the standard but I would also classify them as expensive.
try case club.comthat’s where I got my 4 gun case. $119, and as good a quality as a pelican case
You can’t go wrong with a Pelican, Hardig or Storm. I’ve got several of them and travel at least twice a year which justifies the cost. I use a Pelican 1450 and a Storm iM2975 for both work and play. They are lockable, heavy duty and the Pelican 1450 is small enough that I can put it inside a zippered duffel to conceal it. The problem with this style of case is the added weight in against your weight total allowed by the airlines. The iM 2975 is large, and counts as a piece of checked baggage and usually goes as overweight (> 48 < 100).
I can easily fit 5 1911s and 10 mags in the 1450 with ease. Check google, I think I gave a hondo for my 1450 and have gotten my money out of it. Face it, airlines are hard on luggage. A friend used to work for Delta and told me the difference between regular baggage and stuff marked fragile was whether you tossed it over or under hand.
If you are shipping ammo keep in mind it has to be in factory boxes/container and 11 lbs total. Alaska Air has been accomidating the past year with ammo weight if you are travelling north but don’t take it for granted. Check you individual carrier(s) web sites. Sometimes you have inform the carrier of their own rules with a copy from their website.
I have been looking at the 1450, but how is it with the foam? Do I have to cut the foam for it to fit? I’d put it in a duffel bag and check it with the airline.
Double check with the airlines about the number of guns you can put in one case. Some limit you to one or two per case. You don’t want to find that out at check-in.
Okie John
I went with the 1450 for $100 shipped. Should arrive before I leave.
The foam on the 1450 is pre-cut in little squares like alot of camara cases.
I read it’s pick and pluck which isn’t too bad. I’m also getting a 1720 for my long guns.
