Need good hearing protection

I read some of the sticky about hearing protection, but I still need some advice. I’m looking for a nice set of electric earmuffs not only for shooting, but primarily for using in farm machinery. You see, my family’s farm not a new tractor last summer and it is loud as hell. I would be in it for 6-8 hours a day and even though I wore foam earplugs, my ears someitme would crackle after using the tractor. Thus, I need something that can not only handle the sound of a gunshot, but one that can handle a constantly loud droning of an engine. Thanks.

There are other opinions to be sure, but IMHO, a very good set for under $60 are the Howard Leight Impact Sport Electronic earmuffs.

Here is a link, from Donnie Pridemore’s shop, Big River Tactical:

Donny is a Police Sniper, Armorer, and all around good dude…

The Impact Sports have excellent sound quality, adjustable volume, solid protection and are much sturdier than Peltor’s Tac-6 electronic earmuffs. Further, the Impact Sport only uses half the batteries of the Peltors, and use just two AA on one side, rather than two AAA’s in each ear cup. The battery compartment is located on the exterior, so there is no “sweat-through,” a common complaint of the Peltors, often leading to battery contact corrosion.

There are definitely more high-tech and more expensive models (by all accounts the MSA’s are excellent), but this value is difficult to beat at this price point. For every day use, they are comfortable and one could purchase more than one pair for shooting and farming.

I imagine many people will have a use for ear protection at this price point, FWIW.

Just my $.02, YMMV.

+1 on PR’s Howard suggestion. You may want a comfortable soft ear plug also. I have the same issues working on my farm, doulble hearing protection is a good idea for prolonged tractor work.

BTW, if you get the electronic HL ears, they come with a wire and jack you can plug your Ipod into.

Thanks for the help guys. I’ll have to get some before next summer.
