Need AK mags...

What’s about the best 7.62 30 round AK mags around right now and who has them in stock?
I need 6- and I wouldn’t mind one 40 rounder (if there are any quality ones that run reliably).
TIA,
Dave

I like the Bulgarian plastic waffle mags

They can be a tight fit in some wells but you can sand the mag or file the well, or just run the mags until they break in.

Other than that, I would go with the cheapest mags you can find.

Something like these

Romanian AK-47 30rnd. Magazine Used $11.99/ea

From what I have been told, and seen but not experienced firsthand, you don’t want Promags.

Big +1 on REAL Bulgarian “waffle” mags. Make sure they have the Arsenal Bulgaria mark on them, a 10 in a double circle.

I also really like Russian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Polish, and East German steel mags. The Romanians are OK, but alot of times I’ll see them with much sharper edges on them than the others.

Both Dans Ammo (www.dansammo.com) and Copes Distributing (http://www.copesdist.com/ak47.htm) should have new/like new Hungarian steel mags in stock, and both places are great to deal with.

The 40 rounders are out there, typically East German and Romanian steel, and Bulgarian steel and polymer.

Basic rule of thumb for AK mags…stick with original foreign military, and you’ll be fine. Avoid the US mad mags, they’re crap.

A lot of people seem to rave on the Hungarian mags. Are they of a higher quality?

I hate to use these terms, but the “fit and finish” are usually much, much higher on the Hungarian, Bulgarian, Polish, and East German mags. They can be blued, phosphated, or painted, but they tend to be very uniform, with a minimum of sharp edges and steel splinters that I’ve seen on a few other countries mags.

Bulgarian steel and military spec Arsenal Bulgarian ((10)) “waffle” mag.

You could always try the CDNN raffle… They are selling “Soviet Bloc” mags for $12.99. Some folks report getting relatively rare side-stamped Soviet mags - if you get one you could easily trade/sell it and get another 1/2 dozen mags for it. Most of the mags people are getting are Bulgarian or Hungarian… The last couple weekends they had a buy 6 hi-caps and get the seventh free with free shipping over $75.

Just another option but you can’t go wrong with Dan’s Ammo or Copes…

Spooky

Go with the steel Romanian. Forget about the 40 rounder. The Bulgy waffles are very nice as well but they are thick. Guarantee you the Romanians will fit where as the Bulgys may be tight.

Polish plastic is nice but can crack if dropped.

Russian steel is always nice to have.

Are the 40 rounders junk, un reliable? I just ordered an Arsenal 40 rounder to try out, I know not practical, can’t carry them, very long, too heavy but just had to have 1 for the hell of it.

Other then that, been stocking up on 30 round waffles.
Gonna have to try some steel as well.

Dave, I got Bulgarian waffles from DSAinc.

MILITARY 40’s are every bit as reliable as the 30’s. Stay away from the “Korean” 40’s, that’s commercial crap.

Thats what I wanted to hear, one may not be enough then…

I think the saying goes something like “2 is 1, 1 is none”.

Whole heartily agree with that quote and our wallets prove it :stuck_out_tongue:

K-VAR has some of the Bulgarian Waffle Mags in stock- is there any difference in plastic quality between the black, plum, and green?

They’re all fine. The black ones are military.

Not to hijack the thread, but where can one find decent 5.45 x 39 AK-74 mags? I would prefer Bulgarian polymer, if possible.

I know I should have bought more last year…:frowning:

You just have to troll the web sites and buy when available, might be gone tomorrow.

New 40 rounder came in today…now THATS a lot of firepower

I was looking on Copes, what is the word on the Bulgarian plastic mags with the cartridge markings molded on the side? Are they as good as the Bulgarian waffles?

No, they’re not. They do not have steel locking lugs, they’re just plastic.
